    **Final Project Outline**

**Project Assignment:** You are going to pick a lesser-known historical figure related to the time period of this course (Pre-Contact Native America to The Civil War). This is preferably a person we did not discuss in class, or someone we touched on, but really did not explore more. This should be a person that is normally left out of or forgotten in historical discussions.

**Hidden Historical Figures Statement**: Once you select your person, you will submit a Hidden Historical Figures statement in which you tell me three things 1: who you picked; 2: a brief statement about who they were; and 3: why they are significant to American history.

    **Example statements from second-half US:**

“I am presenting about Nelly Bly. She was a journalist in the late 19th century who went under cover at an asylum and exposed the terrible conditions and treatment of the mentally ill. Her work completely changed psychology, mental institutions, and public understanding of mental health

“My hidden historical figure is Garret Morgan. He is sometimes referred to as the Black Edison because of his amazing inventions. They include a protective smoke hood and a three way traffic light. His inventions revolutionized traffic and also significantly helped with safety, but he was also a businessman and leader in the African American community.

**Hidden Historical Figures Project.** For the final project, you will create a 7-10 minute presentation using PowerPoint, or another presentation platform. (Preferable not Google Doc) Your presentation must have audio of you discussing and analyzing your topic and at least 5 slides, including a title slide. You will discuss the person’s background, where they were from, their upbringing, important life events, etc. Then, you will need to discuss why they were significant to American history, and what we can learn by studying their contributions. Basically, you are making a short lecture like the ones you see in class.

You must include historical information from important resources, including 2 primary and 3 secondary sources. Primary and secondary sources will be explained in the Bibliography outline. You must cite your sources at the end of your presentation. This final slide of sources does NOT count towards your project length.

You will post your presentations in Canvas under the assignment tab.

I will consider the following factors when grading your final project:

    · Does it meet the length requirement of 7-10 minutes?

    · Does it have at least 5 slides?

    · Do you speak clearly and professionally?

    · Do you discuss their personal background?

    · Do you explain their contribution to American history?

    · Do you successfully prove why this person is worth studying?

    · Do you have at least 2 primary and 3 secondary sources? Did you cite your sources on the final slide?

The 1920s were a time of both fun and recovery.  The Great War caused many in the 1920s to have a devil-may-care attitude.  But, the era was one of real change – new products that were mass produced, a robust economy (or so it seemed at the time), and new inventions that filled a person's free time.  How did American culture change in the 1920s?  What elements of it are ones that we still see and feel a hundred years later?

This integration paper gives you a chance to reflect upon the major topics discussed throughout the course. You will have the opportunity to identify connections between Old Testament and New Testament texts. Then you will have the chance to reflect on those connections.

Writing is part of the process of organizing and communicating your thoughts. The paper will be organized into two parts with required information and presentation for each part designated below. Each section of the paper should be around 375 words each, with a total paper word count of about 750 words.

    Please see the
[Integration Paper template](https://mediaweb.saintleo.edu/courses/REL115/_V2/REL115_Integration_Paper_Template.pdf) for more details.

**Part I:** Articulating the Christian perception of the place of love within the Scriptures. In this section, you will be presenting, to the best of your ability, how Christianity would attempt to articulate ideas based upon your Scripture selections.

    1. Identify and explain how one passage from the Old Testament and one passage from the New Testament
**(which were read as part of the course)** are interrelated and conducive to discussing the Christian understanding of love. Note that the passages do not necessarily need to be talking about love overtly. They may be passages, for example, which themselves support the understanding of God’s love and loving activities.

    2. Identify a second, underlying or related theme within your selected passages that is theologically connected to the theme of love that is found in the passages you selected for step 1. Explain how this theme is related to and supports the topic of love in the passages selected.

    3. Identify and explain how Verbum Domini or Dei verbum contains elements which help to make sense of your presentation of the scripture passages. This section will require at least the use of two quotations with effort spent thoroughly explaining your choices.

    **Part II**

    1. Formulate your own response to the integration you articulated in part one of the paper. You may agree with it and add arguments or disagree with it and consider critical arguments. This second section of the paper will begin with a thesis statement in the form of either: “I agree…” or “I disagree…”

    2. In this second part of the paper, you will integrate your own understandings of God, yourself, and the world with the material in the course and specifically your selected passages.

    3. In this section, you will need to consider and explain at least one counterargument to your rationale. You must respond to the counterargument and explain your response.
