    Unit Lesson

Chapter 14: Descriptive Statistics: Making Sense of the Data

Suppose you owned a coffee shop in a nearby neighborhood. In order to boost sales, it would be important to
know the time of day that most people drink coffee or what kind of coffee they prefer. To find these answers,
we must use the principles of descriptive statistics.

Descriptive statistics use data to calculate different facts about certain populations. Not all statistics are
meaningful when taken out of context, but some statistics can give us an idea of surroundings, people,
events, or other areas of interest.

In this unit, you will learn how to construct frequency tables, stem-and-leaf displays, and histograms. You will
also practice how to find the mean, median, and mode of a given distribution.

This unit consists of a homework assignment in MyLab Math and an assignment in Blackboard. Be sure to
review the unit lesson, homework videos, and assignment instructions.

Enjoy Unit VII, and email your instructor with any questions.

Section 14.1: Organizing and Visualizing Data

Imagine you were given a set of 100 numbers and were asked to describe some common trends that you
observed among the numbers. This task may be difficult to complete if the numbers are not presented in an
organized way. In this section, we will learn how to represent data using a variety of methods. We will also
explore the study of statistics and learn some key terms that are used when describing sets of data.

Click the link to view the Section 14.1: Organizing and Visualizing Data lesson.

Section 14.2: Measures of Central Tendency

In the previous section, we learned how to organize data. In this section, we will learn how to utilize data in
order to calculate different statistics. The calculations we will discuss include the mean, median, and mode.

    Unit Lesson

Chapter 12: Counting: Just How Many Are There?

Numbers and counting are some of the first mathematical principles that were introduced to you at a young
age. We first learned how to count to 10; we then learned how to count to 100; and, eventually, we learned
how to count by even and odd numbers.

This unit expands our knowledge on basic counting strategies. For example, counting principles can describe
the number of ways to perform certain tasks. These principles can be applied to many real-world situations.
For instance, some sandwich shops offer an array of breads, meats, toppings, and sauces that can create an
abundance of sandwich combinations. We can apply counting principles to identify the number of different
sandwiches we could create using the number of choices given to us.

Throughout this unit, you will learn how to count objects within a set systematically, how to draw tree
diagrams, how to apply the fundamental counting principle, and how to apply the theory of permutations and
combinations in order to solve counting problems.

After you review the unit lesson, please complete the unit homework and assessment in MyLab Math.

Section 12.1: Introduction to Counting Methods

In this section, we will learn how to apply different counting techniques in order to identify the number of ways
to select objects from a given set. These methods are beneficial when the set of objects is large.

Click the link to view the Section 12.1: Introduction to Counting Methods lesson.

Section 12.2: The Fundamental Counting Principle

The fundamental counting principle utilizes the concept of a tree diagram to identify the number of ways a
series of tasks can be completed by a using a simple formula.

With the help of one or several of the recommended tutorials, discuss your experience and plans for applying analytical methods in your managerial report or in your current (or targeted) profession. (Write 1 Paragraph)

Then you need to comment on these opinions (1 paragraph per opinion):

    Opinion #1

I am still learning how to apply the decision tree on to excel as I am not that much of an excel person. However, the decision tree is a supporting tool essential in observing the content of the branches to give a predicament of a possible target value. Since the nodes are branched off, it enables for a full framework of all possible outcome derived from the decision path which maybe critical in making the best decision. Further the decision tree is implemented with flowchart symbols, better for understanding and interpretation of the tree. These flowchart symbols are as follows: Decision node, chance node, alternative branch, rejected alternative, endpoint node. The decision tree is known for its simplicity, and by applying this analytical tool to the assignment would be less time consuming. Further, the decision tree is compatible with other decision-making tools, therefore should be fairly straightforward analytical tool without conflict.

    Opinion #2

Decision trees can be used in a variety of fields where important decisions need to be made on a constant basis. As we have learned previously, a number of things, such as pressure and stress, can affect a person’s decision making process. Having a visual aid such as a decision tree is a helpful tool for mangers. In a way, it allows a manager to use prospective hindsight before making a particular decision. They can follow a decision from beginning to end and see the different outcomes that can come from following different paths for a decision, without necessarily choosing a path at that moment and then realizing that it failed down the road; Or that the outcome was not what they desired from the particular decision chosen. They can essentially see the potential undesirable outcome that awaits them if they choose one path over another.

The decision tree is also a powerful tool in that it allows for managers to visually show why one decision was chosen over another and how the decision they are deciding on will have a more desirable outcome for the team versus going a different route. While not entirely foolproof, a decision tree provides a good layout for the analyzing multiple alternatives for a decision and seeing them play out visually. While it doesn’t mean that you will get the exact result that you have mapped out on your decision tree, you will be in a much better position, and the probability that it will turn out in your favor will be slightly higher than simply going on gut instinct as some managers will tend to do at moments. As a future project manager I feel that I am sure to make good use of a well laid out decision tree for analyzing decisions, especially ones that don’t require a simply yes or no answer.

    Using SPSS/Excel, compute Pearson’s
**correlation coefficient (r)** for the dataset above. Ensure to include your SPSS output. Analyze the SPSS/Excel output according to the following:

    1. a. From the output, determine the correlation coefficient between Crime Rate vs. Unemployment Rate.

    b. What type of relationship exist between these two variables?

    c. Does crime increase as unemployment rises?

    d. What is the strength of the relationship?

    e. Determine the coefficient of determination

    f. Determine the coefficient of non-determination

    2. a. From the output, determine the correlation coefficient between Crime Rate vs. Median Household.

    b. What type of relationship exist between these two variables?

    c. Is there an inverse relationship between income and crime?

    d. What is the strength of the relationship?

    e. Determine the coefficient of determination

    f. Determine the coefficient of non-determination

    **Reliability (on Chapter 6)**

    (4) You are in charge of the test development program for a police agency and you need at least two forms of the same test to administer on the same day.

(i). What kind of reliability will you want to establish?

(5). You are developing a test that will examine preferences for different types of rehabilitation programs. You may administer the test in January and re-administer the same test on the same people in August, and you have a measure of reliability.

    a. What type of reliability is this?

    b. Using SPSS/Excel, compute the reliability coefficient of the following scores from the test at Time 1 and Time 2.
    **Interpret the reliability coefficients**
