    Franz Kafka

    1883–1924

    Brief Biography

Born 3 July 1883 in Prague to a middle-class, Jewish family.

His father was a German-speaking shopkeeper who was extremely domineering and pushed his son toward success in business

Throughout his life—Franz was highly dependent upon his parents, even though he wished not to be.

Franz attended a prestigious German high school in Prague.

He studied law and received a degree in 1906 but never practiced.

He obtained a position at a semipublic Workers' Accident Insurance institution where he worked until 1922.

Love interests—he longed to marry but he was

Beginning in 1917, Franz suffered from tuberculosis.

Kafka led a fairly active social life, including acquaintance with many prominent literary and intellectual figures of his era, such as the writers Franz Werfel and Max Brod.

He loved to hike, swim, and row, and during vacations he took carefully planned trips.

He wrote primarily at night, the days being preempted by his job.

He died on 3 June 1924.

    Biography Continued

    Kafka’s Works

None of Kafka's novels was printed during his lifetime

He published several of his short stories and his two novellas, including The Metamorphosis, during his life but with great reluctance.

He believed himself a failure as a writer, so he requested all of his unpublished works be burned at his death.

His executor, Max Brod, did not follow this request and published Kafka’s works posthumously.

    Literary Style

Kafka presents a world that is at once real and dreamlike

Individuals are burdened with guilt, isolation, and anxiety

The main character makes a futile search for personal salvation

His works often are seen as symbolizing modern man's anxiety-ridden and grotesque alienation in an unintelligible, hostile, or indifferent world.

In his works, he is noted to combine “a down-to-earth, matter-of-fact setting with unreal or nightmarish events” (Lawall et al. 1965).

Kafka is considered one of the major influences on modern literature.

    The Metamorphosis

Written in 1912 and published in 1915

The genre of the work—it is considered a novella, a work that is longer than a short story but shorter than a novel

Begins in medias res—in the middle of the action—after a decisive event.

Gregor Samsa awakes one morning to discover that he has been changed into a giant beetle.

He must cope with his situation in isolation in his bedroom, ignored by his family who find him disgusting.

The story is presented through a narrative that parallels a newspaper report, constantly giving the facts and answering the question, “What happens next?” (Lawall et al. 1965).

“The terror of art [is that]
    the dream reveals the reality.”

None of Kafka's novels was printed during his lifetime

He published several of his short stories and his two novellas, including The Metamorphosis, during his life but with great reluctance.

**Applying Epidemiology to Program Design for Chronic Disease**

![A person and person looking at each other AI-generated content may be incorrect.](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/applying-epidemiology-to-program-design-for-chronic-disease-20902461)Roughly 28.5 million Americans were still uninsured as of 2017, and 133 million Americans […] suffer from at least one chronic condition.
    —Nash et al. (2021, p. 5)

As you know, promoting positive social change is a part of the Walden mission. To be an effective agent for social change, nurses must be able to logically and critically analyze population health issues using epidemiologic concepts, and then translate this knowledge into evidence-based practice to improve healthcare outcomes. This exercise will afford you such an experience at the population level. This is an exciting time to be working in the field of population health with all the new, dynamic, and innovative technologies and strategies to help patients and populations become more knowledgeable about their health.

This week’s Learning Resources present numerous health problems that result in a need for ongoing care. Your Assignment is to select a chronic disease of professional importance to you, and then design an intervention program to improve the health of populations affected by it.

    **To prepare:**

    · Review the Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) website from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

    · Select one of the identified chronic diseases of national significance that impacts a population of interest to you.

    · Consider a health outcome you would like to improve in this population related to the selected chronic disease.

    · Develop a program proposal to improve this health outcome for this population using the assignment guidelines below. Select one of the program models in Curley, Chapter 7, to guide your planning.

    · Review the SMART objective resources for a review of how to write objectives for your program.

    · Use the Walden APA paper template, including appropriate APA 7 headings, to develop this Assignment.

    **The Assignment**

**In a 7- to 10-page proposal (not including title page and references), address the following:**

    · Briefly identify your selected chronic health issue and population.

    · Describe the geographic region and important characteristics of this population.

    · Describe the patterns of the disease in your selected population using the epidemiologic characteristics of person, place, and time.

    · Identify one health outcome you would like to improve for the population.

    · Briefly summarize current evidence that supports the importance of improving this health outcome.

    · Briefly describe the evidence-based program you are developing, and why this approach will best fit the needs of your population.

    · Explain what data you would need to collect, and how you would obtain and analyze it. You may choose to collect primary data or use secondary data. Justify your choice.

    · Using the “SMART” method, write short- and long-term objectives for the program.

    · Identify the stakeholders who should be involved in program planning.

    · Identify which program planning model (see Curley, Chapter 7) you selected for your program. Justify your selection of model. Based on the model, explain how you would plan, implement, and evaluate the program.

    · Explain any relevant cultural or ethical considerations related to your program design.

    · Explain how you would fund the program.

    · Describe strategies that would be appropriate for marketing the program.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

topics: Sustainable Food, Renewable Energy, Sustainable Water Management, Sustainable Fashion

    1. Title page – Include Title, Course, Professor and Date as well as your name.

    2. Introduction – Develop an introduction that presents your  investigation. You can use the questions from the case study as a guide.  A good introduction should include background information on the topic,  the definitions your reader will need to understand your report and a  brief summary of what you are going to tell us in the body of the  report.

    3. Content – You can call this section content, or you can divide  the section into several sections each with their own title, but in  general the content sections of your report should contain the results  of your investigations. In other words, the answers to the questions  posted in your case study. Don't limit yourself to answering each  question with a sentence or two. The questions are realy just there to  guide you and point you in the right direction. Make sure you  investigate the topic and write an complete account of what you found.  Feel free to include tables, figures or pictures, or any other visual  aid you can embed in the word document.

    4. Figures and Tables must be properly labled and numbered. In  scientific reports, tables always should have a Table number and a title  ABOVE the table ( for example Table1. Master list of groceries and  where to buy them.  Figures, however, should have a title and a number  that appears UNDER the picture, and are usually accompanied by a short  explanation of what is included. (for example;under a picture of a farm  you would write Fig.1 – Owen Brothers Farm, South Mills, NC. This farms  produces organic cage-free eggs and sells to the public at farmers  markets in the area.).  Figures and tables should be there for a reason,  and should enhance the text of your report.

    5. Conclusion – This is the section where you tell me your opinions  about the things you discovered on your investigation. Its a good place  to include some of the final questions from your instructions. The fact  that these are your opinions however, doesn't mean you can write  anything you think off. Your opinions must be backed up by the facts you  presented in your research.

    6. References – Any scientific report has to be properly referenced.  If you use somebody elses words (cut and paste) you should do so in  quotations and you need to reference the source. the same is true if you  use pictures or tables. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE LARGE SECTIONS OF YOUR  REPORT!!!! this needs to be your own words. But quoting a source is a  very appropriate use of your reference material.  To write your  references properly, follow the instructions given on the Reference  section you'll find here.

**Case Scenario 3:** Mandy is a 10-year-old who has been brought in by her new foster mother for a well-child exam. The foster mother states that Mandy was removed from her home due to neglect and physical and sexual abuse and expresses concerns Mandy may have an eating disorder.

    · What types of abnormal behaviors might Mandy exhibit?

    ·

    · Mandy’s history of severe trauma, including neglect and both physical and sexual abuse, places her at high risk for behaviors such as difficulty forming attachments, extreme mood swings, poor impulse control, and regressive behaviors like bedwetting. She might also show avoidance of specific people or situations, or dissociation. Mandy may also engage in food refusal, poor, eating habits or excessive exercise.

    · What physical findings might you find during the physical examination?

    · On physical examination, findings could include bruises, scars, or healing fractures. Signs of sexual abuse may include genital irritation or injury and symptoms of urinary tract infections. If Mandy is suffering from an eating disorder, physical signs might include low weight for age, brittle nails, hair thinning, and delayed growth and puberty.

    · How should you manage Mandy’s history of abuse?

    · A comprehensive, sensitive, and child-centered approach is necessary to manage Mandy’s care. It’s critical to establish a safe and supportive environment for her, both during and after the exam. Psychological evaluation and therapy will also be needed to guide her to move on from the events. If an eating disorder is suspected, Mandy should be referred to a specialist team experienced in pediatric eating disorders for assessment and treatment.

    Part 2: Case Scenario 2

Compare the characteristics of generalized anxiety disorder with obsessive compulsive disorder.

    · Both generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are anxiety related disorders, but they have distinct characteristics. GAD involves excessive and persistent worry about various aspects of life, often accompanied by physical symptoms like restlessness and muscle tension. In contrast, OCD is characterized by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety.

What medications have been approved for managing obsessive compulsive disorder in children her age?

    · Regarding medication for managing OCD in children, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are often considered. Fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft) are two SSRIs that have been approved for children and adolescents with OCD. SSRIs are typically initiated at a low dose (eg, the equivalent of 25 mg of sertraline) for the first week and titrated up gradually (eg, every two to four weeks) to a therapeutic dose, which is then given a 12-week trial. If the clinical response is not adequate, subsequent gradual adjustments are made to maximize efficacy and minimize toxicity with additional trials of six to twelve weeks (Rosenberg, 2022).

What are the common side effects of these medications?

    · Common side effects of SSRIs like fluoxetine and sertraline can include nausea, diarrhea, headache, drowsiness, insomnia, and changes in appetite or weight. Some individuals may experience sexual dysfunction, agitation, or increased anxiety when starting these medications. It's essential to monitor for any adverse effects and communicate with a doctor if they occur.

How has cognitive behavioral therapy, coupled with a medication, shown to be effective for treatment in the pediatric population?

    · Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) coupled with medication has been shown to be effective in treating pediatric OCD. CBT helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns while gradually exposing them to anxiety-inducing situations. This exposure and response prevention (ERP) component helps them learn to manage their compulsive behaviors. Combining CBT with medication can provide a comprehensive approach to managing OCD symptoms, addressing both psychological and neurological aspects of the disorder. However, the specific treatment plan should be tailored to each individual's needs and discussed with a mental health professional.
