Create a body of evidence (Evaluation Table) to compare the three studies you appraised in weeks 4 and 5. See the evaluation table templates  D1 and D2 (linked below) for examples.

In weeks 4 and 5, you completed the critical appraisal of three studies. This week, you will meld these studies into a synthesis upon which to base practice and standards of care. To create this synthesis, you’ll compare the three studies using an
    **“Evaluation Table”** that
    includes the following:

    1. Citation: Author, Date of Publication, & Title

    2. Purpose of Study

    3. Conceptual Framework

    4. Design/ Method

    5. Sample/Setting

    6. Major Variables Studied and Their Definitions

    7. Measurement of Major Variables

    8. Data Analysis

    9. Study Findings

    10. Worth to Practice:

    11. Level of Evidence

    12. Strengths/Weaknesses

    13. Feasibility

    14. Conclusion

Your PICOT question is the driver for the evaluation table and synthesis tables. For example, with data analysis, while many statistics may be reported in a study, only those statistics that assist you in answering your clinical question should be placed in the table. Also, only the findings relevant to the clinical question should be placed in the table. Keeping the order of information placed in the table clear and simple is imperative for comparisons across studies for synthesis.

Some suggestions to make the table user-friendly are to:

    (a) use abbreviations (e.g., RCT) with a legend for interpretation,
    (b) keep the order of the information the same in each study, and
    (c) place similar statistics in the same order in each study for easy comparison.

850 Appendix D / Evaluation Table Template and Synthesis Table Examples for Critical Appraisal

    EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS TABLES
(e.g., Comparisons of Variable of Interest: Outcome, Intervention, Measurement,
Definition of Variable, Levels of Evidence [design] Across Studies)

Example One: The table below is one example for how you could construct a synthesis table for
    interventions across studies.

    Interventions

    1

    2

    3

    Studies A B C

    × ×

    ×

    ×

    D E F

    ×

    ×

    × ×

    ×

    ×

A, study author and year; B, study author and year; C, study author and year, etc.; X, presence of the
    intervention.

Example Two: The table below is another example of a synthesis table—this one is focused on

design, sample, and outcome across studies.

Minimally, there should be three synthesis tables: One that refects level of evidence, one

that refects variety of interventions used, and one that refects both intervention and impact on

outcome (see Unit 2 EBP Exemplar). There could be many more types of tables. Choose your

information carefully that you will include in your syntheses tables. Create your OWN synthesis
table—remember the studies are telling the story about your issue! Your studies should indicate

what is important to put in the synthesis table.

Appendix D / Evaluation Table Template and Synthesis Table Examples for Critical Appraisal 849

    **## Createabodyofevidence.docx**

    Lynnette

    Lakeland Clinic

    Dear Lynnette,

I am writing to express my gratitude for the opportunity to lead a project addressing the diversity issues at Lakeland Clinic. As you mentioned, leadership involves many skills, such as effective communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. In this letter, I will analyze successful leadership qualities, compare them to my leadership attributes, and outline how I plan to lead and foster teamwork for this project.

    **Leadership Qualities and Comparison**

A thriving healthcare leader must possess various qualities that enable them to effectively manage diverse teams and address complex challenges. Among these qualities are cultural sensitivity, strategic thinking, and effective communication. As Latif (2020) espouses, cultural sensitivity is critical in healthcare settings, where understanding and respecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of both staff and patients is crucial for providing high-quality care. Similarly, strategic thinking allows leaders to develop innovative solutions to complex problems, while effective communication ensures that these solutions are implemented smoothly and efficiently (Koning, 2022).

One leader who exemplifies these traits is Mary Seacole, a pioneering nurse known for her work during the Crimean War. She demonstrated exceptional cultural adaptability and the ability to connect with diverse groups, crucial for addressing diversity issues in healthcare (Dickey & Seeber-Combs, 2023). Mary Seacole's experiences and achievements are a powerful example of how leadership can be exercised in challenging environments. As Hughes et al. (2023) argue, her ability to establish a "British Hotel" near the front lines, where she provided care to soldiers from all sides of the conflict, highlights her capacity to build trust and foster collaboration across cultural and national boundaries.

Similar to Mary Seacole, I value cultural sensitivity and adaptability. My experience in working with diverse teams has taught me the importance of understanding and respecting different perspectives. I have come to appreciate that effective leadership entails setting clear goals and expectations and creating an atmosphere where everyone is valued and empowered. However, I recognize the need to develop my skills further in creating an inclusive environment, which I plan to enhance through this project. In particular, I aim to deepen my understanding of the challenges faced by diverse populations and develop strategies to better support them by leading a team focused on addressing diversity issues.

    **Leadership Approach and Collaboration**

As the project leader, I will adopt a collaborative leadership style. This approach involves working closely with team members to ensure everyone's voice is heard and valued. It encourages diverse perspectives, which is critical for addressing complex diversity issues (Moore et al., 2023). Further, as Silva et al. (2022) point out, collaborative leadership is particularly effective in healthcare settings, where teams often consist of professionals from various disciplines. Leveraging the diverse expertise of team members helps develop comprehensive solutions that address the complex nature of diversity issues.

I will utilize video conferencing tools for remote meetings to ensure inclusivity and flexibility and facilitate collaboration among the interdisciplinary team. This technology allows team members to participate fully, regardless of location, which is especially important for ensuring that all voices are heard (Embrett et al., 2020). Clear goals and responsibilities will be set for each team member to maintain accountability and ensure that everyone understands their role in achieving the project's objectives. Consensus-based decision-making processes will ensure that all perspectives are considered and valued. This method promotes ownership among members of the team as well as helps to build trust and strengthen relationships within the team.

Tasks will be assigned based on individual strengths and interests to maximize team effectiveness. Meyers et al. (2023) support that aligning tasks with each member's expertise and passions makes it easier to ensure that everyone is motivated and engaged in their work. Regular team huddles will be held for open discussion, providing a platform for team members to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. These sessions will be structured to encourage active listening and constructive feedback, ensuring that all perspectives are heard and respected.

In addition, I plan to celebrate traditions and cultural events within the team to promote understanding and unity. Recognizing and honoring the diverse backgrounds of individuals can help create a sense of belonging and foster a more inclusive environment (Stanford, 2020). An Employee Resource Group (ERG) will also be established so staff can share experiences and provide feedback. ERGs are valuable tools for promoting diversity and inclusion by offering a platform for staff to connect with others who share similar backgrounds or interests (Byrd, 2022). They are also resources for leadership, providing insights into supporting diverse staff better and improving organizational culture.

The need for effective collaboration is supported by research demonstrating that diverse teams are more innovative and productive when they feel included and valued (Stanford, 2020). Thus, by fostering a collaborative environment, we can leverage the diverse expertise of our team members to develop comprehensive solutions to the diversity issues at Lakeland Clinic. This approach aligns with current healthcare leadership trends, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving high-quality patient care. In addition to these strategies, I will ensure that our team is well-equipped with the resources and training to address diversity issues effectively. This will involve workshops on cultural competency, diversity awareness, and conflict resolution. Investing in the development of team members will enhance their ability to work effectively with diverse populations and improve patient outcomes.

Furthermore, I recognize the importance of community engagement in addressing diversity issues. The clinic's success depends on internal changes and building trust with the community it serves (Lansing et al., 2023). Therefore, I plan to engage with local leaders and community groups to understand their needs and concerns better. This outreach will help us tailor our solutions to meet the patient population's specific cultural and social needs, ensuring that our efforts are effective and sustainable.

I am committed to leading this project with a collaborative approach that values diversity and inclusivity. In particular, leveraging my leadership skills and fostering effective teamwork, I am confident we can develop meaningful solutions to improve diversity and inclusion at Lakeland Clinic. This project offers a unique opportunity to enhance our organization's culture and improve employee and patient outcomes. I am eager to work closely with you and the rest of the leadership team to ensure the success of this initiative.

Thank you for your support and guidance throughout this process. I look forward to discussing my approach further and exploring how we can work together to address the diversity problems at Lakeland Clinic.

Regular team huddles will be held for open discussion, providing a platform for team members to share their thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

Epidemiological Study Designs in the Media

![A person looking through a microscope AI-generated content may be incorrect.](https://www.sweetstudy.com/questions/wk-7-resp-epid-20898117)

Nearly every day, population health studies appear in the media. The studies often include epidemiological research. The type of study design used can have a profound impact on how the study results are analyzed, interpreted, and reported. Common study designs include case control, cohort, cross-sectional, and community intervention trials

Based on media descriptions of the research, however, facts about the issue under study may appear less than obvious. Media reports may sensationalize results and overstate outcomes. Someone familiar with epidemiological methodology may note a lack of detail in mass media reports of research findings compared to articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

For this Discussion, you will compare an epidemiological study to a mass media article written about the study to examine ways epidemiologic information is disseminated to and utilized by different audiences.

    To prepare:

    · Locate a mass media article published
**within the last year** that describes findings of an epidemiological study. Be sure that the article is about an epidemiological study and not another area of population health.

    · Then, use the Walden Library to locate the peer-reviewed research article on which the mass media report is based.

By Day 3 of Week 7

**Post** a response to the following:

    · Briefly summarize the study you found, and then include the citations for both the mass media and the peer-reviewed articles.

    · Explain what epidemiological concepts are included in the mass media article (e.g., measures of association, study design, confounders, and bias) and how they compare to those in the peer-reviewed article.

    · Give your assessment of how well the mass media article represented the actual research that was conducted. Describe any obvious omissions from the mass media article that epidemiologists critiquing the study would need to know.

    · Finally, imagine that a patient brings this mass media article to you and asks you for your informed opinion. Explain how you would respond or interpret the article for the patient.

By Day 6 of Week 7

    **Respond** to
    **at least two colleagues** on
**two different days** in one or more of the following ways:

    · Compare your selected articles with respect to differences in study design.

    · Discuss differences or similarities in the media coverage of your selected studies.

    · Expand on a colleague’s posting with additional insight and resources.

    · Make a suggestion or comment that guides or facilitates the discussion.

Remember to include information from the Learning Resources as appropriate.

Mass media articles are often designed to present information or scientific findings in a way that is accessible to a broad audience, but they may oversimplify or misinterpret the information or research complexities. Epidemiology studies typically offer a detailed explanation of the research method used, how the data was collected and analyzed, and how conclusions were drawn. Mass media reports are much shorter and tend to condense the findings. They focus attention-grabbing elements of the study, often leaving out the technical details. Key information, such as sample size or statistical significance, may be omitted to simplify the findings for a general audience. In this discussion post, I will compare a mass media article with an epidemiology study on a specific public health issue. In this discussion post, I will compare a mass media article with an epidemiology study on a specific public health issue, obesity. By comparing the mass media article to the original study, I am to highlight the differences between the presentation to the public and that to the scientific community.

Radar et al., (2024) performed a cross-sectional study to review the national trends in body mass index (BMI) and obesity in US adults (>18years) to identify changes in obesity prevalence post pandemic and introduction of weight loss medications (semaglutide). Their study showed straightforward evidence that there was a national decline in the prevalence of obesity from 2013 to 2023,

specifically in the south, among women and those aged 66 to 75. Chow and Syal published in NBC News (2024) that obesity in the US declined for the first time in over a decade, noting a decline in the south, among women, among those aged 66 to 75 and among Black Americans. Both reported a rise in obesity among Asian Americans.

In the article published by Radar et al., (2024) they spoke of many epidemiology concepts, population, age, sex, race, ethnicity, medical insurance, study limitations, bias, and prevalence by going into specific details. The media article by Chow & Syal (2024) provided a much simpler explanation of the study pointing out brief demographics, the years studied, and the percentage obesity rates dropped. The public does not necessarily need the specific details of an epidemiology study for several reasons, but it is important to note that a

simplified understanding of the study's findings is still valuable for making informed decisions about health. Ultimately it is the job of the epidemiologists to report out the data and discuss in detail the study, while journalists job is to summarize all the key findings and report it out in easily understood language (Samad & Reed, 2025).

I found the report done by NBC News to be highly informative for the general public audience,  easy to read and understand why the study was done. Chow and Syal (2024) provided direct quotes from the Rader article, and consulted an endocrinologist to gain his feedback regarding the study. The media did an excellent job of making complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public without oversimplifying the key takeaways. Additionally, the use of engaging language and relatable examples made it easy for readers to connect the research to their own lives, which is often one of the challenges when communicating epidemiology to a broader audience. I did not note any obvious omissions from the NBC News report.

First, I would thank the patient for bringing the article to my attention. It is important to validate their interest in understanding their health. I would like to let them know that it is great they are seeking more information, and ask if I could read the article. If necessary, I might ask them to highlight specific aspects of the study they are concerned about or curious about. I would next assess the credibility of the article. I would explain the findings of the study in a way that is easy for the patient to understand, without using too much medical jargon. I would highlight the most important takeaways and discuss

medical jargon. I would highlight the most important takeaways and discuss the potential impact on their health. I would then gently tell the patient that there are limitations to relying on a media article for absolutes regarding healthcare topics and studies. If I did not trust the source within the media article I would recommend the patient discuss the topic with their primary care provider and ensure that it is trustworthy, reliable information.

In conclusion, while the specific details of an epidemiology study are crucial for researchers and public health professionals, the general public typically benefits more from the broad, actionable conclusions rather than the intricate methods or statistical nuances behind the research. This helps individuals apply the findings to their daily lives without getting overwhelmed or misled by the complexities of the science. While mass media articles provide a simplified explanation of a study and its data it would not serve a strong purpose to the world of research, and healthcare providers. Offering assistance to a patient by reviewing an article that peaked their interest is not necessarily harmful as long as you are putting out a disclaimer that not all media can be a trusted truth for healthcare and if they are ever in doubt, their primary care provider is a great place to discuss topics like this.
