    Video:

In the video "Travel to Costa Rica & Experience Pura Vida" (full clip from 0:00 to 5:33), presented by National Geographic, viewers are able to observe authentic and respectful communication and worldviews in Costa Rica. The video features Nat Geo Explorer Dr. Christine Wilkinson and photographer Ruben Salgado Escudero during the green season in Costa Rica. Pura Vida is the main topic of the film, as it is the greeting, way to express thanks, farewell, and philosophy of the residents of Costa Rica. The audience is able to see the locals exchange warm smiles and conversations in the Turrialba Market, drinking coffee and enjoying each other’s company, meeting Indigenous people respectfully, walking in the mangrove forest, etc. All these scenes illustrate authentic relations between Costa Ricans and their guests, which is why the short video can be used as a reliable classroom source.

The three concepts presented in the textbook help us understand the communication behaviors that we see on screen and why this particular video can help us become more respectful when communicating with people with different world views. First, Costa Rica is a high context society (Chapter 6, Section 3). In high context societies, meaning comes not through words that are used explicitly but through common understanding, tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures and the social environment that surrounds the communication. In this case, the multi-faceted use of pura vida is in itself an invitation to relationship rather than a verbal code – all one needs is a smile and saying the words and the situation would determine whether it would be a greeting, an expression of gratitude or a goodbye.

Secondly, the consistent portrayal of solidarity, familial atmosphere, and group orientation in the video demonstrates collectivism (Chapter 6, Section 3). Collectivist societies give preference to relational harmony and cooperation over individual efficiency or achievement. The locals spend more time talking to one another, welcome tourists as transient members of a greater community, and are aware of helping one another and the environment. Such scenes of shared experiences both at the market and in the natural surroundings contrast with more individualistic forms of communication which place importance on directness and accomplishment first of all.

Thirdly, the friendly and welcoming behavior of the Costa Ricans reflects the face-saving techniques described by the face-negotiation theory (Chapter 6, Section 3). Face-negotiation theory is aimed at explaining how all cultures have people who try to save their face and preserve it in every interaction which could be embarrassing for both parties. In the video, the interactants make the exchange pleasant and positive so that "everyone quedará bien." Smiling, open body language, and the concept of pura vida can be considered the facework in daily life.

Observing such patterns enables me to realize that my communication style, which is rather direct and low context, is not universally applicable and better than others. With knowledge of high context awareness, collectivist values, and face saving, I am able to communicate with Costa Rican counterparts being more patient, more smiley, slower and giving priority to the relations rather than speed or efficiency. Such careful approach will prevent any ethnocentrism, the judgment of another culture based on the norms of your own. In this way, the video helps me not only to learn about different communication styles but also become a better communicator when I deal with people who have a different worldview.

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between interpersonal and intergroup aspects of mindfulness and communication competence in 337 international students in the Russian universities. The positive results regarding intercultural communication self-efficacy and anxiety were found to be linked to greater mindfulness. Their expertise is based on their work as university psychology researchers in the field of cross-cultural psychology and education and developmental psychology. These findings will be used as a basis to describe how to enhance respectful interactions with Costa Rican residents by focusing on tone, gestures, and personal presuppositions. Data analysis is performed with survey data from the other country, which provides a general frame and not direct evidence of the behavior of the Costa Rican.

This video captures pura vida in the presence of people and places from Costa Rica. Typical topics of conversation and joint work done in the market can serve as examples of verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and relationship building. National Geographic is a known documentary publisher but, while it uses a travel framework, it keeps the footage appealing, not a sample of the population. I will discuss the selected segment, 0:00-05:33, along with scholarly research, on respectful interaction. This segment will allow me to examine communication aspects that I consider high context, without assuming that all Costa Ricans are high-context communicators.

This article outlines a sound-mapping project for the nation of Costa Rica, which gathered over 400 sounds across seven provinces in both an academic fieldwork and citizens' participation context. The sound recordings come from markets, oral practices, ordinary life, and natural settings, and they reflect the manifestation of culture and cultural places. The sound recordings represent markets, oral practices, the environment, and daily life, and their voices reflect culture and cultural places. Osorno Fallas is a digital communication researcher for the Universidad Estatal a Distancia in Costa Rica and Solano Brenes is a historian and educator with graduate studies in history and museum communication. I am choosing this source because I will use the recordings to understand how the video portrays the local market, setting, and various cultures in the country. It is focusing on regional variations, which will enable me to avoid assumptions and stereotypes and think of all the Costa Ricans as having regional communication styles.

This mixed-methods study explores open-mindedness and intercultural communication ability in 32 Australian health care students participating in international placements. The questionnaire results correlated open-mindedness with advances in skills in cultural communication; the interviews, however, pointed to active cultural immersion and readiness to learn. University researchers in health and education, the authors supported their findings with surveys and interviews in a peer-reviewed study. I will draw on this research to describe how inquiry and polite engagement might allow visitors to learn about Costa Rican worldviews rather than judge them through common preconceptions. The small sample and self-reported metrics limit generalization, thus I will relate the findings to my proposed communication technique rather than making assertions about Costa Rica.

This COM 120 textbook explores interpersonal communication in a “mindful” way: noticing the assumptions one must make and paying attention to others. It is written by experts in communication education at universities, lending credibility to the authors due to their professional relationships and research. I will include Chapter 6 (section 6.3) for the high-context communication, collectivism, and face-negotiation theory. Rather than giving just any statistics about Costa Rica, I will use these points on specific interactions with the videos. In response to this discussion, I will reflect on how to communicate respectfully across different worldviews, considering the concept of ethnocentrism and stereotyping.

    Introduction

Effective performance management is essential in healthcare organizations because it promotes employee accountability, teamwork, communication, and quality patient care. Summit River Nursing home, a 60- bed nursing facility, has experience challenges involving communication breakdowns, medication errors, and resident satisfaction. Although the facility has a positive reputation and adequate staffing, its current performance management system focuses primarily on individual employee performance management system focuses primarily on individual employee performance rather than teamwork. According to Aguinis (2023), performance management is an ongoing process that involves identifying, measuring, and developing employee performance while aligning individual contributions with organizational goals. As a consultant to the human resources director. I would recommend revising the performance management systems to strengthen teamwork, improve communication, and enhance resident care.

How Would You Proceed with Modifying the Performance Management Process?

The first step I would take in modifying the performance management process at Summit River Nursing Home would be to evaluate the existing system and identify areas requiring improvement. The current 12- item graphic rating scale measures individual characteristics such as productivity, reliability, attitude, and job knowledge but does not adequately assess teamwork and collaboration. I would recommend developing a more comprehensive evaluation system that measures both individual accomplishments and team performance. In addition, I would conduct employee surveys, review performance evaluation, and meet with department supervisors to identify communication barriers and workplace challenges. Aguinis (2023) emphasizes that effective performance management requires clearly defined expectations, continuous feedback, and employee development. Establishing measurable performance standards related to teamwork, communication, medication safety, and resident satisfaction would help align employee performance with organizational objectives.

What Specific Strategies Should Be Considered? There are several strategies that should be considered to improve the performance management process at Summit River Nursing Home. I would start by recommending implementing team-based performance evaluations that assess communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and conflict- resolution skills. These evaluations would encourage employees to recognize the importance of working together to provide safe and effective resident care.

Next, I would introduce regular performance feedback sessions instead of relying exclusively on annual evaluations. Continuous feedback allows supervisors to identify performance concerns early and provide employees with opportunities for improvement (Aguinis ,2023).

The third thing I would establish is measurable performance goals focusing on reducing medication errors, improving resident satisfaction, and strengthening communication between departments. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)n.d.) emphasizes that effective teamwork and communication are important components of patient safety.

Lastly, I Would implement employee recognition programs to acknowledge individuals and teams demonstrating outstanding collaboration and commitment to resident care. These strategies would promote employee motivation, accountability, and continuous organizational improvement.

Whom Would You Involve in Developing the Process?

Developing an effective performance management system requires participation from multiple individuals throughout the organization. I would involve the human resources director, facility administrator, nursing director, department supervisors, frontline employees, and representatives of contract staff.

What obstacles Might Arise, and How Would You Overcome Them?

One significant obstacle in implementing the revised performance management system would be employee resistance to change. Employees who are accustomed to individual evaluations may feel uncomfortable being assessed on teamwork and collaboration. Another challenge would involve incorporating contract employees who work part-time or on an as -needed basis and are not fully integrated into the organization’s existing performance management process. Other obstacles could include scheduling conflicts, limited training resources, inconsistent supervisory evaluations, and communication difficulties between departments. These challenges could interfere with successful implementation and reduce employee participation.

To overcome these obstacles, I would begin by clearly communicating the purpose and benefits of the revised performance management system. Employees should understand that the goal is to improve teamwork, patient safety, and organizational effectiveness rather than create unnecessary criticism or punishment.

I think the training for supervisors and employees on performance expectations, communication, conflict resolution, and evaluation procedures. Contract staff should receive appropriate orientation and participate in relevant training opportunities. Coordination with contracting organizations would also help establish consistent performance expectations while respecting contractual responsibilities. I would also like to introduce the revised system gradually and evaluate its effectiveness through employee feedback, resident satisfaction surveys, and patient safety indicators. Continuous monitoring would allow management to identify challenges and make necessary adjustments. According to AHRQ, structured teamwork training can support better communication and safer health care practices.

    · Each deliverable must have at least four references (peer-reviewed).

Please note the following points related to the research component of this Course Project.

Utilize multiple references using online research, including the DeVry University on-site or online libraries. Also, consider using a public library or other area university or college library for print resources. Additional secondary research sources that would be appropriate for this project may also be used. The purpose of completing the research component for this Course Project is to include strong references to support your findings.

**Week 7**: Analyze and create an employee-facing communication based on the change in your researched company. This is the Communicating the Change Paper (including at least four references). This deliverable is due in Week 7.

For the Communicating the Change Paper, you will complete the following:

    1. Select one of the communication components the organization would have distributed due to the change and write the communication in a Word document.

    2. Analyze any media, news, or other communications that explain the change in the organization and explain how the company handled communicating the change to its stakeholders.

An essential part of any change project is how the change is communicated to the organization, the change agents, the line workers, the customers, and the public. Along with media relations issues, communicating change (especially in a publicly traded company) can involve multiple legal and regulatory aspects as well as personnel and management concerns. Perhaps the most challenging part of handling Kotter’s “establish a sense of urgency” is that too many inexperienced or immature change agents read this to mean “panic the troops.” Never do this!

    Here's what to do:

    3.
**Write an analysis** of the communication your company used to communicate the organizational change.

    1. Research and analyze any media, news, or other communications that provide details on the change that occurred in the organization.

    2. Explain how the change was communicated to its stakeholders and the information shared in the communication you researched.

    3. Discuss whether the communication effectively addressed the change to its intended audience (refer to the Chapter 7 reading).

    4.
**Create an original communication** sample your organization could have distributed related to the change. Do not re-create a communication previously used by an organization.

    1. Write the communication in a Word document (either the text or the script if the communication would have been oral). You may select to complete an interoffice memo, press release, employee or customer newsletter, or a corporate email update.

    2. Use your creativity to communicate the message. The form of communication you use should be based on the appropriateness of the message. You will be graded on how well your communication relates to the audience and stakeholder group to which it is intended.

    5. Select an organization that has experienced a substantial change in the past 5 years. Find the company and the change information online using EBSCO or another appropriate resource in the DeVry Library. Other ways to find information include utilizing Google, Yahoo Finance, or Reuters and looking up annual reports of companies that interest you. Often, reading the first sections of these reports (i.e., letters from CEOs) will give you ideas about changes they have gone through in the past year(s).

    6. You will need to ensure the following:

    7. Your organization is publicly traded so that information will be easy to research and find.

    8. The changes happened recently, so you will find sufficient online information about how they were handled.

    9. Here are some research examples. These are simply illustrative. You can research and find several companies and topics of change that could work for this Course Project, and you are encouraged to do so. Please ask your professor for assistance if you have questions or need more ideas

    10. Review an organization impacted by the pandemic. Furthermore, you can discuss how they handled these pressures (using a specific image of change management) and how a leader with a different image might have handled it differently.

    11. Organizations have needed help selecting a new chief executive officer (CEO) for their company. Review the company's CEO history and write a paper comparing the pressures (internal or external) and how they impacted the company's overall productivity.

    12. Review a company entering the airline industry, its entrance into (and possibly its completion of) bankruptcy, and how it handled the changes through management.

    13. Review a company that has recently been through mergers and acquisitions and how they handled the culture changes.

    14. Review a company that has had industry changes, how they have reacted to those changes, either successfully or unsuccessfully, and how their reactions perhaps resulted in their success or failure.

    15. Paper Formatting (Use current APA formatting)

    16. Use a title page.

    17. Font: 11- or 12-point Times New Roman.

    18. Running Head is not required.

    19. The paper is to be double-spaced with one-inch margins.

    20. Each section of your paper should have headings (per the sections you are developing) that will guide the reader.

    21. Indent paragraphs.

    22. Insert page numbers at the top right.

    23. Use current APA for the in-text citations throughout the paper. If you need to become more familiar with APA formatting, refer to the Library and tutoring for assistance.

    24. Include a separate reference page at the end of the paper. All references per APA are to be in alphabetical order.

    25. Save your paper in the following format: Your last name, the initials of your first company discussed in the case study and the week of the deliverable.
