**## **Week 3 Assignment – The Foundation of Data-Driven Decisions****

    ****Name:** Taziyana Butler**

    ****Professor Name:** Dr. Schwartz**

    ****Date:** 12/16/2025**

**Scenario: You would like to determine whether eating before bed influences sleep patterns.**

**Remember that the steps 7 steps of a statistical study are:**

**1. Formulate the purpose of the study.**

**2. Identify the variables for the study.**

    **3. Define the population.**

**4. Decide what sampling method you will use to collect the data.**

    **5. Collect the data.**

**6. Summarize the data and perform any statistical calculations needed.**

**7. Interpret the results (Week 2 Learn, 1).**

****Explain what you would do to complete each step of a study where you would like to determine whether eating before bed influences sleep patterns. What would you need to do and what would you need to consider to complete each step?****

    **| | |**
    **| — | — |**
**| **Step 1** | The purpose of this study would be to find out whether eating before going to sleep has any impact on a person’s sleep patterns. The research is aimed at determining if having meals late at night might lead to improved or disrupted sleep, or might not affect at all. |**
**| **Step 2** | The variables in this study would include what a person eats before bed, how much they eat, and how much time passes between eating and going to sleep. These would mostly be continuous variables since they involve amounts and time. |**
**| **Step 3** | The population for this study would be based on convenience. I would collect information from people who are easily available to me, such as family members, friends, or neighbors, because they are simple to reach. |**
**| **Step 4** | I would use convenience sampling. This method works well for this study because the people I would ask are already nearby and easy to schedule. It makes the data collection quicker and simpler. |**
**| **Step 5** | I would collect data by interviewing individuals about their eating habits during the night and the impact of these habits on their sleep. I would inquire about the time of their last meal in relation to going to sleep and if they believe that the night eating has an effect on their sleep quality. |**
**| **Step 6** | After collecting the responses, I would summarize the results by finding averages and looking for patterns. This would help me see whether there is a connection between eating before bed and how well someone sleeps. |**
**| **Step 7** | From the results, I would be able to make a conclusion about whether eating before bedtime influences a person’s sleep patterns. |**

    ****Then, answer the questions below.****

    **| | |**
    **| — | — |**
**| **What is your hypothesis?** | My hypothesis is that eating soon to bedtime affects sleep patterns. It is my opinion that having food too soon before going to bed may be a factor in the time it takes to fall asleep and the quality of sleep. |**
**| **How would the results of the data influence decisions you might make about eating and sleeping?** | I would use the results to decide whether it is better to eat earlier or closer to bedtime. If the information indicates that eating late at night negatively impacts sleep, I would not eat just before going to sleep. |**
**| **How would we know if the results of the study are valid and reliable?** | A larger sample size and better sampling methods (like random sampling) help make the results more accurate. If the study is done carefully and produces consistent results, then the findings would be more reliable. |**
**| **What questions would you ask to find out more about the quality of the data?** | I would ask questions like what type of food the person ate, whether it was heavy or light, and if anything, else might have affected their sleep. |**
**| **Why is it important to gather and report valid and reliable data?** | Using inaccurate or unreliable data can lead to wrong conclusions. If the information is not dependable, the study results won’t help anyone and could even spread misinformation. Having valid and trustworthy data ensures the findings are useful and meaningful. |**

Course Learning Outcomes for Unit VII

Upon completion of this unit, students should be able to:

    1. Apply mathematical principles used in real-world situations.
1.1 Interpret bar graphs and histograms.

    6. Demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of statistics.

6.1 Develop frequency tables, stem-and-leaf displays, and histograms to represent data visually.
6.2 Compute the mean, median, and mode of distributions.
6.3 Compute the five-number summary of a distribution to draw a box-and-whisker plot.

    Required Unit Resources

Chapter 14: Descriptive Statistics: Making Sense of the Data, Sections 14.1 and 14.2

    Unit Lesson

Chapter 14: Descriptive Statistics: Making Sense of the Data

Suppose you owned a coffee shop in a nearby neighborhood. In order to boost sales, it would be important to
know the time of day that most people drink coffee or what kind of coffee they prefer. To find these answers,
we must use the principles of descriptive statistics.

Descriptive statistics use data to calculate different facts about certain populations. Not all statistics are
meaningful when taken out of context, but some statistics can give us an idea of surroundings, people,
events, or other areas of interest.

In this unit, you will learn how to construct frequency tables, stem-and-leaf displays, and histograms. You will
also practice how to find the mean, median, and mode of a given distribution.

This unit consists of a homework assignment in MyLab Math and an assignment in Blackboard. Be sure to
review the unit lesson, homework videos, and assignment instructions.

Enjoy Unit VII, and email your instructor with any questions.

Section 14.1: Organizing and Visualizing Data

Imagine you were given a set of 100 numbers and were asked to describe some common trends that you
observed among the numbers. This task may be difficult to complete if the numbers are not presented in an
organized way. In this section, we will learn how to represent data using a variety of methods. We will also
explore the study of statistics and learn some key terms that are used when describing sets of data.

Click the link to view the Section 14.1: Organizing and Visualizing Data lesson.

Section 14.2: Measures of Central Tendency

In the previous section, we learned how to organize data. In this section, we will learn how to utilize data in
order to calculate different statistics. The calculations we will discuss include the mean, median, and mode.

The calculations we will discuss include the mean, median, and mode.

professional athlete of my choice Juan Soto because he is recognized for his strong offensive skills and his ability to
perform consistently at a high level in Major League Baseball
    1) Describe at least 2 available statistics for the athlete you choose – what do those numbers means and how do they apply to that athlete/sport?
    2) Why are those numbers/stats important for that sport? Why are they reporting those values and why do those stats have meaning?
    3) MODULE 1: How would you describe these variables based on the lecture videos you have watched thus far in this course? What is their scale (N,O,I,R)? Are they continuous or discrete in nature? Explain.
    4) MODULE 3: We have learned of several measures of central tendency in the course thus far. Report on at least 2 measures of central tendency for each of the stats you are reporting on across the years available for that athlete.
    5) MODULE 5: Visualize the data and paste the figure into your submission document. Below it, describe any trends you see. (e.g., Was there an increase or decrease in performance based on the metrics you displayed? If so, during what year and what may have been a contributing factor?)

    Unit Lesson

Chapter 12: Counting: Just How Many Are There?

Numbers and counting are some of the first mathematical principles that were introduced to you at a young
age. We first learned how to count to 10; we then learned how to count to 100; and, eventually, we learned
how to count by even and odd numbers.

This unit expands our knowledge on basic counting strategies. For example, counting principles can describe
the number of ways to perform certain tasks. These principles can be applied to many real-world situations.
For instance, some sandwich shops offer an array of breads, meats, toppings, and sauces that can create an
abundance of sandwich combinations. We can apply counting principles to identify the number of different
sandwiches we could create using the number of choices given to us.

Throughout this unit, you will learn how to count objects within a set systematically, how to draw tree
diagrams, how to apply the fundamental counting principle, and how to apply the theory of permutations and
combinations in order to solve counting problems.

After you review the unit lesson, please complete the unit homework and assessment in MyLab Math.

Section 12.1: Introduction to Counting Methods

In this section, we will learn how to apply different counting techniques in order to identify the number of ways
to select objects from a given set. These methods are beneficial when the set of objects is large.

Click the link to view the Section 12.1: Introduction to Counting Methods lesson.

Section 12.2: The Fundamental Counting Principle

The fundamental counting principle utilizes the concept of a tree diagram to identify the number of ways a
series of tasks can be completed by a using a simple formula.

Section 12.2: The Fundamental Counting Principle

The fundamental counting principle utilizes the concept of a tree diagram to identify the number of ways a
series of tasks can be completed by a using a simple formula.

    Section 12.3: Permutations and Combinations

Have you ever tried several different combinations of letters and numbers in order to identify the correct
password to a website? If so, then you have utilized the theory of permutations and combinations.
Permutations and combinations are mathematical terms that are used when solving detailed counting
problems. These principles help us identify the number of possible outcomes for a particular situation.
