    Group Project

    Mostafa Rezaei

    Big Data (Introduction to Data Science)

    General information

    The group project gives you the opportunity to practice many of the skills we learned in the class.

    It includes 5 steps:

    Step 1: Find and describe a data set

    Find a publicly available data set. The data set should not be from the UCI ML Repository or any other
    data set commonly used in ML competitions. Open Data Initiative websites are also good places to find
    data sets, for example:

    • https://www.canada.ca/en/services/science/open-data.html
    • https://effis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/applications/data-and-services
    • https://www.alberta.ca/wildfire-maps-and-data#jumplinks-2

    Once you find a dataset, you should figure out:

    • the individual or organization that created it;
    • the purpose of its creation;
    • its terms of use;
    • how the data was collected and the sampling procedure;
    • the definitions of the variables and their units.

    Step 2: Perform an initial EDA

    Perform an initial EDA, where you create plots and group summaries to understand the variation of each
    variable, including typical values, clusters, outliers, missing values, etc.

    Step 3: Perform an in-depth EDA

    In this step, you should perform an in-depth EDA in order to discover interesting covariations and patterns
    in the data.

    As discussed in the class, you should go through an iterative cycle of asking questions about the data and
    finding answers to the questions using data transformation and visualization. Investigate the answers you
    obtain with curiosity and skepticism and follow-up with further (more detailed) questions.

    [https://www.alberta.ca/wildfire-maps-and-data#jumplinks-2](https://www.alberta.ca/wildfire-maps-and-data#jumplinks-2)

    Step 4: Build a prediction model

    In the final step, you should think about an interesting prediction problem using your dataset. Think about
    the details of the prediction model, including

    • the response variable and predictor variables;
    • the evaluation metrics;
    • how you will conduct CV to estimate the out-of-sample performance of the model and to tune the

    hyper-parameters of the model.

    Step 5: Present your findings!

    The value of your research is limited if you keep it to yourself. So in this step you will polish your most
    interesting findings in a presentations for the world to see. See below for details.

    Deliverables

    1. Create two plots that visually represent your most notable findings from your EDA:

    • The plots should be created using ggplot2
    • Ensuring they are polished and self-contained with meaningful titles, subtitles, labels, and captions
    • Save each plot separately as an PNG or PDF file
    • For preparing plots for communication, see https://r4ds.hadley.nz/communication

    2. Build a prediction model and calculate its out-of-sample performance

    • Specify the response and predictor variables
    • Specify the evaluation metrics used
    • Specify how you perform CV to obtain an estimate of its out-of-sample performance and to tune

    its hyper-parameters

    3. Provide a R Notebook file (with an extension .Rmd) containing your code and code outputs, such as
    plots and tables

    • Output a HTML file from the notebook, ensuring it correctly displays all code and outputs
    • Use minimal comments in your code and follow the Tidyverse style guide: https://style.tidyverse.

    org/index.html
    • On the first line of the R Notebook, briefly list the contributions of each team member

    4. Record a 5-minute presentation of your work

    • Create a 5-slide presentation
    • Slide 1: Contextual information about the dataset
    • Slide 2: A detailed description of the dataset
    • Slides 3 and 4: The two plots showcasing your primary EDA findings
    • Slide 5: Information and results of your trained prediction model
    • Your recorded presentation should not exceed 5 minutes

    Submission details

    • Upload your work on the dedicated assignment for the group project on BB
    • Only one person per group needs to submit their group’s work
    • Compress all your files into a ZIP file, containing

    Hello classmates,

    I am active duty in the military and currently on Eastern Standard Time. I have 4 kids, I’ve been in for over 18 years, and I am overdue for a mini vacation. My job title is Management, and it entails managing people, different types of aircrews, planning missions, handling pay for various companies and consist of traveling. Sometimes traveling a little too much.

    I am taking this class because it is a requirement, and it’s a weak area of mines when it comes the security of IT. I feel as though there is more that I should know and understand when it comes to the security. I hope that throughout this class, I can have a great understanding and be able to utilize it later throughout my work career. Initially, it was showing that my TA had not approved it yet, so I was a little uncertain if I was in the class or not. Now I’m just waiting for my book.

    IT Security is an interest to me because there are things within the security section that I am unfamiliar with. Depending on which route that I take with my degree, I will need to know the basics.

    My hobbies are reading, playing volleyball, and relaxing when I can. The kids take up majority of my time, but I manage to make it all work.

    I look forward to learning from you all in this class and sharing what we already know. Knowledge is power.

    **D.J Post #2:**

    Hello Class,

    As a Ghanaian by birth, you can call me
    _Kwadwo_ because I was born on Monday.  I recently relocated to Texas after years of living in Hawaii due to a DOD contract assignment. I work as a Technology Operations Analyst at Wells Fargo Bank, and before that I worked as a Network security engineer for the State of Hawaii Department of Defense. I graduated from APUS with a master’s degree in Cybersecurity Studies (Spring 2024) and have realized that organizations are paying higher salaries for well-trained cybersecurity professionals with business administration background, that’s why earning an MBA degree could be the best investment you ever make.

    At Wells Fargo Bank, I collaborate with IT and business units to implement secure systems and infrastructure. My daily tasks at work include managing and optimizing security tools and technologies, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and SIEM solutions. Today, I was assigned to conduct gap analyses to identify weaknesses in our existing security policies and develop actionable recommendations.

    Information security management is crucial for organizations because it protects sensitive data, ensures business continuity, maintains customer trust, and helps organizations meet compliance and regulatory requirements, ultimately safeguarding their reputation and long-term success. At the end of the course, I hope to understand how to design, implement, and evaluate security programs, manage risks, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations, while also fostering a security-aware culture.

    My hobbies include surfing and watching soccer games (English Premiership). Also, in my leisure time, I teach kids how to code. My family recently purchased a 3D printing machine, very soon our first product will be ready out of the printer. 3D printing is fun, I recommend it to all. My career goal is to further my education to attain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Enterprise Risk Management after MBA. Someday, I would like to be a college professor so I could help inspire younger ones.

    I look forward to working with you all, let’s make the class fun
