    **Unit 4 Assignment – HRMD 620**

    **Case Study**

The company operates about 1,500 convenience stores. A sales assistant at one of the company’s stores was murdered while on duty on the second shift. The murder was widely publicized, and employees complained of inadequate security measures. As a result of the murder, 15 sales assistants telephoned the union requesting a union organization effort. The union sent representatives to 60 stores in the area where the murder had occurred and left union authorization cards. Two days later the company notified the union that an injunction had been issued during a prior union campaign prohibiting solicitation on company property.
_[Hint: Keep in mind that there is no date given when this injunction was filed and whether was still valid.]_

The next workday, the company had a meeting with the store managers in the area and talked about the need to improve security. The company officials also discussed the union’s organization activities and reminded the managers of the “no solicitation” policy and stated that a union would not necessarily do the employees any good. Later that week, the company had an unprecedented meeting for all sales assistants. Approximately 1,200 sales assistants attended and were paid for their time. The company officials told the employees that they did not need a union and that the employees from the union could retrieve their authorization cards. The employees were asked to voice their complaints. Thus, the employees listed the following:

    · getting less than 40 hours work per week;

    · not having breaks;

    · not being paid for overtime work;

    · working alone at night; and

    · poor lighting at the stores.

The next day the company sent a memo to all regional personnel directing that sales assistants should work a 40-hour workweek; canopy lights were installed at all the stores; a policy was adopted that no one would be required to work alone at night; and sales assistants began receiving wages for after-hours overtime work. The company posted “no solicitation” signs in all stores and directed that those signs be enforced; if the employees did not enforce the signs, they would lose their jobs. Later that month the company held further meetings with sales assistants, who again were paid for their time. They asked to select committee representatives to meet with management to discuss their complaints. Management officials left the room while the employees selected their representatives. The company made a list of the ten most frequently mentioned items from the employees’ recommended subjects for the committee to discuss.

Meanwhile, the union filed a representation petition with the NLRB seeking an election in a unit of all College Park, MD sales assistants. The company president told the managers to tell the sales assistants that if they joined the union, the company would close those stores. The first meeting of the Employee Management Committee was held and the ten priority items were listed, granting employees a new vacation policy, improved health-care benefits, sick days, change in holiday hours for pay, recognition of seniority ranks, and improved security systems. Not long after that, the company sent an additional memo around announcing other improvements in life, major medical, and accident insurance plans, in addition to death and family benefits and a revised disciplinary appeal system
_. [Hint: One has to wonder if this is a last-minute effort by Management, or an early Christmas gift for employees – but now is your time to consider the possibilities.]_

    · getting less than 40 hours work per week;

    · not having breaks;

    · not being paid for overtime work;

Motor Skills: Coordinates fine motor tasks well (e.g., handwriting, drawing).

Social Skills: She engages appropriately with peers and adults.

    **Differential Diagnosis (DD)**

    **DD#: 1: Functional Constipation**

This is the most likely diagnosis in this case. Functional constipation “is the presence of two or more of the following for a minimum of one month: straining during defecation, hard stools, the sensation of incomplete evacuation, manual maneuvers to facilitate defecation, less than three bowel movements per week, and absence of loose stools without laxatives” (Bashir, & Khan, 2024).  This patient has several of the classic characteristics of functional constipation in the form of hard stools, straining, and mild discomfort without the accompaniment of any ominous signs such as hematochezia, fever, or substantial weight loss. The lack of recent diet changes or illness also validates this diagnosis. Relevant positives are low fiber and straining in bowel movements. Relevant negatives are no abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or systemic symptoms.

    **DD#2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)**

Though less probable due to the limited symptom duration and lack of alternate constipation/diarrhea, IBS should be considered in the differential diagnosis (Di Rosa et al., 2023). IBS is the recurrent or chronic abdominal pain accompanied by a change in bowel habits, either diarrhea, constipation, or both. As seen in IBS, this patient does not complain of alternating bowel habits, bloating, or mucus with stool. Also, a lack of a chronic course of symptoms excludes IBS as an actual diagnosis at this point. IBS is a clinical diagnosis requiring recurrent symptoms for ≥2 months. Follow-up overtime for different symptoms will discriminate between functional constipation and IBS to assess if constipation becomes recurrent or alternating with diarrhea. The correct positives are a few abdominal pains and alterations in bowel habits. The correct negatives are the absence of diarrhea, bloating, and mucus per stool.

    **DD#3. Intestinal Obstruction**

Intestinal obstruction is a more ominous but less likely differential diagnosis. It usually presents with severe pain, vomiting, distension, and reduced bowel sounds. Even though the patient has slight distension and straining, no evidence of severe pain, vomiting, or reduced bowel sounds, characteristic of obstruction, exists (Griffiths & Glancy, 2023). In addition, the slow development and absence of systemic signs are contraindicative of intestinal obstruction here. This diagnosis would be more likely only if the patient worsens or new warning signs appear. Positives of relevance are mild distension and straining. Negatives of relevance are no vomiting, severe pain, or bowel sounds.

    **PLAN OF CARE (P)**

    Testing and Diagnostic Studies

    – No immediate testing is required based on clinical presentation.

    – Consider abdominal X-ray if symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.

    **Pharmacologic Treatment**

    – Polyethylene Glycol 3350 (MiraLAX)

-Dosing: 0.7–1.5 g/kg/day (maximum 17 g/day) mixed in water daily.

-Patient-Specific Dose: 17 g once daily at night.

    **Non-Pharmacologic Treatment**

    – Increase fluid intake to at least 6–8 cups of water daily.

    – Encourage a high-fiber diet rich in fruits.

    – Promote regular toilet habits by encouraging the child to sit on the toilet for 5–10 minutes after daily meals.

    **Patient Education**

    – Educated the patient and parent about the importance of maintaining adequate hydration and incorporating more fiber into the diet.

    – Emphasized the need for consistent toilet habits to establish a routine.

    – Advised monitoring for worsening symptoms such as persistent pain, blood in stool, or weight loss, which would require immediate medical attention.

    **Anticipatory Guidance**

    – Discussed strategies to prevent future episodes of constipation, including maintaining a balanced diet and staying physically active.

    – Reinforced the importance of routine wellness visits for ongoing health maintenance.

    **Follow-Up**

    – RTC if symptoms persist beyond 10 days

    – Schedule routine wellness visits in 6 months.

-If symptoms persist, TSH, celiac panel, or abdominal imaging, and refer to GI for further evaluation

    Task

In this assessment you will identify three key ‘Moments of Truth’ that have affected your sense of

leadership (either positively or negatively) and create one A3 sized poster/infographic.

You are required to link the ‘Moments of Truth’ to the theoretical perspectives contained in the

topics covered in this subject as a minimum. You may also explore other relevant associations.

Refer to the Instructions for details on how to complete this task.

    Context
Leadership is a journey of self-discovery and raised self-awareness. In this assessment you will reflect upon

moments in your leadership journey that have shaped your sense of yourself as a leader. Moments of

Truth are the various points throughout your leadership journey where you discovered or learned

something about yourself and your self-image as a leader. These Moments of Truth may be positive or

negative. The Moments of Truth may be an event, an experience, and/or a person who influenced your

sense of yourself and who you are and how you behave as a leader.

    MGT601_Assessment 2_Brief Page 2 of 8

A ‘moment of truth’ is a decisive moment in your life when an important realisation is made or a

critical choice is taken. It is a time when, responding to circumstances, you make a decision that

defines your character and gives you insights about your authentic values. These Moments of Truth in

your leadership journey may have formed or changed your impression of how you see yourself as a

    leader.

A ‘moment of truth’ represents a turning point that helps to define who you are and shapes the path you

take. Awareness of these times gives you important insights into who you are and the values that guide

    your actions.

An infographic is a way of representing information in a graphic format. It provides a means by which the

relationship between context, events, theoretical perspectives and critical insights can be explored and

mapped. There are a number of different approaches that can be adopted in developing your infographic.

For example, a mind map is a visual tool used to organise and structure information with the main idea or

topic at the centre of the diagram and subtopics radiating out from it. When constructing a mind map,

colours, images and other visual elements can be used to represent different types of information.

Note: The Dynamic Leadership philosophy of this subject is you do not have to be in a position of

authority to be a leader. Therefore, it is important for you reflect upon earlier ‘Moments of Truth’ in

your leadership journey before your first work experiences.

    Instructions
You will create one (1) A3-sized infographic to reflect on your leadership past and demonstrate your

understanding of how key events have contributed to the leadership behaviours you demonstrate today.

Often, you find your leadership orientation is formed well before you enter the workplace, so reflect back

to your early, formative years and identify circumstances and situations that resulted in you making a

decision that you may have later come to realise is indicative of your true character and values. You will

likely discover many times when you encounter ‘Moments of Truth’.

To complete this assessment task, you should:

    1) Reflect upon Moments of Truth in your leadership journey. Identify 3 Moments of Truth to be

    included in this assessment task.

    2) Briefly describe what was happening in that moment.

    3) Further reflection and critical thinking to consider and link the Moments of Truth to what you

have learned about leaders and leadership in this subject.

    4) Explore other conceptual links and relationships between the 3 Moments of Truth.

    MGT601_Assessment 2_Brief Page 3 of 8

    5) Communicate your three (3) ‘moments of truth’ in an A3-sized poster/ infographic* – this can be a
mind map, rich picture or any other visual representation.

Ensure your Poster/ Infographic clearly conveys the connection of these Moments of Truth and to

relevant theories, frameworks and concept covered in this subject.

    6) Ensure you include in-text references on your Poster/infographic to acknowledge the source of

    your information in your infographic.

    7) Create a reference list using APA7 to provide the full bibliographical information for your in-text

    references.

    8) Submit ONE A3 poster/ infographic complete with intext references as PDF. Submit a reference

Submit a reference

list using APA7 as a separate WORD document.

*Creating a poster/ infographic. There are a number of tools and templates you may use to create

your infographic. Or you can draw your poster/ infographic freehand. Choose the best one for you.

Whichever tool you use, your A3 poster/ infographic must be visually engaging, easy to read and

    include less words, more pictures.
