    – ## FinalProjectInstructionsandRubricFall.pdf

    **## FinalProjectInstructionsandRubricFall.pdf**

Instructions and Rubric for (Letter to a US Political Representative)

In this project, you will be writing a letter to an elected representative to request them to take
action on a specific policy. You are welcome to mail this letter to your selected representative,
but this is not required as part of this project.

Submit completed letter. DUE MAY 3

    a. LENGTH: 900-1200 words (12-point font, single-spaced)

You must first determine the specific action you want taken and then determine which elected
representative (federal, state, or local *Texas*) to send the letter to. The aim in your letter is to
present an argument to persuade the representative to endorse and carry out the policy you
desire. You are welcome to use prompts and posts from past forum discussions in selecting
your policy and making your argument. Make sure that the desired policy is one that falls within
the jurisdiction of the representative you select (asking the Mayor of Austin Texas to repeal
Obamacare, for example, would not work). You also want to pick a policy that is specific and
feasible. Avoid vague or unattainable policies (asking the President of the United States to
establish world peace would be both overly vague and also not within the sole power of the
United States to do). Specific, feasible policies are easier to argue for and easier to find
evidence for than vague, unattainable policies.

The letter should take the form of a formal letter, so include the name and mailing address of
the representative you are writing (formal letters often include the mailing address of the
sender but, for your privacy, I do not require this. If you like, you can make up a fake address to
include, for example “123 Anywhere St., Austin TX”). The letter should open with a salutation
and have an appropriate closing (“Sincerely” or something equivalent). Purdue University
provides more guidance on what to include in a business letter here. The paper should open
(that is, have at least in the first paragraph) a clear statement of the policy action you are
    arguing for.

As part of the argument for your request, you will be required to provide supporting evidence.
However, since this is a letter, and not a research paper, weigh the number of citations
accordingly. You will have to present facts and back them up (with, say, references to news
articles), but a representative would not want to read a letter with 50 footnotes. For example,
when you provide a particular statistic from a newspaper article, you should note in the text in
a parenthetical reference (footnotes are not required, though you can use them instead if you
prefer) the name of the publication and the date of publication. For example: “Crime in DC
went up 10% in the first three months of 2021 (Washington Post of Oct. 1, 2020). Provide a
hyperlink or URL if possible. Providing one or two references per page would be adequate.
Since this is a letter, a bibliography is not necessary. It should be possible to identify your
    source from your citation, however.

All submissions will be submitted to TurnItIn for plagiarism detection. Do not copy and paste

from other sources into your paper unless you are providing a direct quotations (with quotation
marks). These will get flagged, even if you change a word or two. When you are quoting or
using information from a source, be sure to cite. Citations are needed for both direct
quotations and paraphrases (for an assignment like this, I expect direct quotations will be rare
and paraphrases will be much more common). Instructions on how to cite in an informal
context like this are given above.

Both the presentation and paper must incorporate, relate, and discuss appropriately and sufficiently relevant course concepts from lectures and readings that relates to group and organizational theories. 3.Specific to the oral presentation: The PowerPoint presentation can include optional materials such as photographs, videos (no more than a three-minute video) in order to enhance students’ understanding of the topic.

    ##### Paper/Presentation Outline:

The following sections are required to create the PowerPoint presentation/paper: Social Injustice is at the heart of many of the social problems we face today and are rooted in historical issues of racism, discrimination, and intolerance. Social workers have traditionally been agents of social change and have been instrumental in grassroots movements targeted at alleviating social injustices. Macro social workers have a responsibility to be knowledgeable and sensitive to issues of racism, discrimination, and disempowerment. Social Workers need to be leaders in advocating for laws, local, state and national policy initiatives to ensure equitable and consistent treatment of all people. Advocacy and empowerment also need to be addressed at the macrolevel where social work practitioners assist in the education and empowerment of groups and communities. This assignment can address social injustice in a variety of different ways: 1. Discuss an area of social injustice at the local, state, national or international level and develop a proposal to address through public policy, law and judicial interventions. 2. Discuss a plan for advocacy to address the oppression of a specific population. (Choose from the list below) A sample letter to a congressional representative or other politician may be included. 3. Share NASW’s position on the issue. -PAPER must be in APA format and presentation must have 3 minutes video. 8-10 page.

In terms of our self-esteem measure, examining the instrument through the lens of Classical Test Theory (CTT) versus Item Response Theory (IRT) would yield different insights regarding its reliability and validity. From a CTT perspective, the focus is on total test scores and the assumption that each observed score is composed of a true score and random error (Crocker & Algina, 2006). In this framework, reliability is often evaluated using internal consistency measures such as Cronbach’s alpha, and item statistics like item-total correlations are used to assess how well each item contributes to the overall scale. However, these statistics are sample-dependent, meaning the properties of the items may change with different populations (DeVellis, 2017).

In contrast, IRT takes a probabilistic approach and models the relationship between a person’s latent trait (e.g., self-esteem) and the probability of endorsing specific item responses (Embretson & Reise, 2000). Unlike CTT, IRT provides item-level information, such as difficulty and discrimination parameters, and can evaluate how well each item functions across varying levels of self-esteem. This theory also allows for the development of more adaptive and precise assessments, as items can be tailored to individual respondents. Moreover, IRT parameters are invariant across populations, assuming model fit, making it a more robust choice for generalizing findings and refining test items (Hambleton, Swaminathan, & Rogers, 1991).

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

When considering our self-esteem measure, it is important to understand the distinct ways classical test theory (CTT) and item response theory (IRT) approach measurement. Although both aim to accurately assess constructs like self-esteem, they differ in how they conceptualize scores, reliability, and item performance. From a classical test theory perspective, the focus is primarily on the total score obtained from a test. CTT assumes that each observed score is made up of a true score and an error component (Cook, 2013; Kline, 2005). For example, if we administered a 20-item self-esteem survey, CTT would emphasize the total score and assess reliability using methods such as Cronbach’s alpha. It would not deeply evaluate how individual items function across different levels of self-esteem. In CTT, item difficulty and discrimination are considered sample-dependent, meaning results may change depending on the group tested (Putnick & Bornstein, 2016).

In contrast, item response theory (IRT) offers a detailed and dynamic view. IRT treats item responses probabilistically, examining how each question functions at different levels of the trait being measured, such as self-esteem (Edelen & Reeve, 2007). Rather than assuming one error term for the whole test, IRT acknowledges that measurement error varies across different trait levels. For example, some items on a self-esteem scale may work well for individuals with moderate self-esteem but not those with very high or low self-esteem. Park and Park (2019) conducted a Rasch analysis, which is a form of IRT, on the Rosenberg self-esteem scale with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Their findings showed that while all items demonstrated acceptable fit statistics, the difficulty level of the items varied significantly. This highlighted that certain items may not adequately assess self-esteem across all ability levels. Notably, Park and Park (2019) found that the 4-point rating scale functioned well, suggesting that the responses were captured effectively even in specialized populations. It also reinforces how IRT provides critical insights that CTT would not easily detect, such as whether an item is too easy or too difficult for a given population. It also demonstrates how Rasch modeling helps ensure items maintain consistent meaning across diverse groups.

Furthermore, CTT would suggest that the same test is equally reliable across all respondents, but IRT shows us that reliability can vary across levels of self-esteem. With IRT, we can better tailor test items to match a participant’s ability level, potentially using adaptive testing methods (Cook, 2013). Hence, CTT gives us a straightforward and broad understanding of test performance. At the same time, IRT allows us to look more closely at individual items' precision and different self-esteem trait levels. Both frameworks are valuable, but offer different insights into how we interpret our self-esteem measurement.
