    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Social learning theory and cognitive development theory have valid criticisms when applied to gender development. However, when viewed together, they do a fairly good job of describing how gender develops in children.  Studying and reviewing these two theories for your assignment this week will help you prepare for your signature assignment, where you will discuss nature and nurture influences of gender development.

    **Instructions**

Create content suitable for a blog where you explore distinct stages of gender development in relation to two major theories: Social learning theory and cognitive developmental theory.

You should create an engaging narrative to educate a vast population of readers. Use easy-to-understand language while ensuring that any facts and definitions are covered by sound science (include citations!). If appropriate, blog content should include pictures, graphs, and images, and you could include video links if desired.

Length: This assignment should be 3-4 pages, excluding the title and reference pages.

References: Include a minimum of three scholarly resources.

The completed assignment should address all assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA 7th edition standards.

Essay 1: The Department of Homeland Security has the goal to apply risk management principles to homeland security operations and has stated that "Ultimately, homeland security is about effectively managing risks to the Nation's security" (DHS, 2010, p. 2). Drawing upon your class readings and additional research examine how risk management is used by the homeland security enterprise and how that use benefits such aspects as resource allocation, strategic planning, grant award, and the multitudes of other homeland security issues and operations.

Essay 2: In your readings, you have been provided a variety of definitions for the term homeland security. Additionally, the national strategies and readings have talked to the difference between homeland security and homeland defense. Drawing upon your readings, class materials, and your own scholarly research, describe and define Homeland Security and Homeland Defense. Discuss the various missions, tasks, duties, responsibilities, operations, etc. and highlight where they overlap. Lastly, drawing upon your findings, propose your own current and complete definition of homeland security.

    What is a Webography?

A webography (aka webliography) offers students like you a new perspective on an old
assignment classic: the annotated bibliography. Even if you have never heard the
phrase “annotated bibliography,” most (if not all) of you have certainly compiled a
bibliography (or a reference list) for a research project or paper. But you may not yet
have been asked to compile and create an annotated bibliography. So, let’s begin by
reviewing terms with which you probably are familiar:

 A bibliography/reference is a list of sources (books, journals, websites,
periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. A bibliography/reference
usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher,
    etc.).

 An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation.

When we put these two terms together, then, we arrive at the following definition of
    “annotated bibliography:”

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each
citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The
purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality
    of the sources cited.

Like the classic annotated bibliography, the webography/webliography offers readers a
list of citations and accompanying annotations to source materials related to a given
topic. However, unlike the classic annotated bibliography (which can include both
library and non-library resources), the webography/webliography only includes online
    resources (i.e., webpages).

    Instructions

You will prepare and submit an annotated Webography outlining seven (7) Homeland Security/Defense websites. Pick a key homeland security theme for this assignment such as one of the DHS mission areas* or some other HLS focus like preparedness, counter-transnational organized crime / smuggling networks, inter-agency cooperation, etc.

*DHS mission areas: Counter Terrorism and Prevent Threats; Secure and Manage Our Borders; Administer the Nation’s Immigration System; Secure Cyberspace and Critical Infrastructure; Build a Resilient Nation and Respond to Incidents; Combat Crimes of Exploitation and Protect Victims.

Attached are the following documents to assist you in being set up for success for this assignment:

Document titled “What is a Webography?”

A generic Webography example titled "Webography Example" that will give you a good overview of what a complete Webography looks like.

A template example titled "Webography WMD Example" will give you a glimpse of the start of what yours should look like. Note: These sites are not relevant to the websites you will choose.

    Additional Guidance/Tips:

The websites may be federal, state, local, commercial, or private

Do not pick all federal government cites. Change it up, providing various perspectives on the issues.

Don't forget that you are reviewing the website – do not pick documents on a website, that will not meet the intent of the assignment

Catch the reader's attention with dynamic photos (don't forget to cite under them to give credit if they are not from the specific website you are reviewing. For example, on the cover page, you might use a picture you randomly found on the internet — make sure you cite to give credit where you got the picture)

When you use pictures in your document, don't forget to compress them (this is an option under "Picture Tools" and select "Compress Pictures" and uncheck "Apply only to this picture" in order to compress all the pictures in your document. Also, select "E-mail (96ppi)" for the best way to upload your work (note the steps may be different depending on what version of Word you are using)

Don't just tell what the selected website is about — explain what the strengths and weaknesses are that you identified

Don't forget the Table of Contents

Don't forget the Introduction — tell the reader what you are going to cover

Don't forget the Conclusion — tell the reader the key points of what you told them

Finding unique websites can make the assignment more interesting – this takes some effort. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box

Don't cut and paste from the website — put things in your own words. If you summarize the website material, then I would not expect to see a citation as I will equate that you are relating the material to the website you are reviewing

If you use direct material, then it is expected that you cite correctly and use quotation marks and the appropriate citation.

    Technical Requirements

Your paper must contain at least 7 websites.

Include the Title and Reference pages.

Type in Times New Roman, 12 point, and double space.

Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.

Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic-type sources.

All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.

    Nuclear Threat Initiative

The Nuclear Threat Initiative is a

nonprofit organization that has a mission

to strengthen global security by building

trust and transparency that are outlined in

    the Non-Proliferation Treaty. At first

glance, I noticed the layout of the website

is clean and inviting with various colors of

white and light blue. The website is built

around a blog style that allows real time

information to be easily located and

displayed. I like this because it doesn’t

make the website stagnant and allows the

    reader to find updated information

extremely easy. What caught my eye

initially is the very top navigation bar

under “Glossary.” This is a glossary that

is independent of NTI and provides the reader with various terms and definitions that directly

relate to the websites content including WMD. Some of the terms come from the various

treaties, weapons that cause mass destruction, and other miscellaneous terms. As do other

websites, the NTI website provides an “About Page” that describes the company and its mission

statement. Not only does the website provide up to date information, but also provides links to

the two major social websites such as Twitter and Facebook. I like that this website likes to

interact and engage its followers as social networking provides the vehicle for communicating

between the company and its readers. NTI also provides video content as the world is shifting to

this type of medium for information such as YouTube videos. The profiles of different counties

are very informative. If you are interested in a country, such as Iran and its history as far as

WMD is concerned, you just click on the country’s flag and the information for that state are

displayed. A quick overview of that country is explained to include information related to

Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical warfare. Some of the information is about the state’s position

on WMD and where they stand on the NPT. The NTI website is a very informative site that

covers a wide range of information pertaining to countries and their involvement in WMD. It

covers all NBC threats and provides in depth analysis on a wide range of topics in the form of

articles, reports, testimonies, speeches and opinions.

Comment [HS1]: Here is one example of what
one would look like…..put each website on a

separate page….keep your review to one page for
    each website

Comment [HS2]: Use pictures that catch the
    reader’s attention

    Comment [HS3]: Highlight the website
    strengths that you have identified

And don’t forget to also highlight what the

Studies will often use raters and observers in research as it is an effective way to code behaviors, track changes, and assess qualitative data. In theory, raters and observers should be well-trained with well-defined parameters which would lead to few disagreements between raters but that is not always the case. Using raters has its own set of challenges as people can bring in their own biases into a study which impacts the results. Measures of interrater reliability help to assess the raters, note the degree of consistency across the raters, and can help give confidence in the results. Bordens and Abbott (2022) note that interrater reliability helps make procedures that can be reproduced, it allows studies to meet the standard of reliability established, and it can help find any problems.

One scenario in which observers are used in research is in behavioral observation studies. For example, Jeong et al. (2025) created an observational tool that viewed mother-child interactions during a five-minute span where the family participated in a shared picture book activity. The researchers created a list of nineteen items that they would track between both mother and child. Another scenario in which raters are used is in diagnoses and clinical interviews. Becker et al. (2024) recorded interviews with both caregivers and children (using different scales) to evaluate children for cognitive disengagement syndrome. These interviews were recorded and were given to raters to review and give a diagnosis. Raters can also be used to assess qualitative data such as comparing job candidates against one another. This can be done by rating candidates based on specified criteria.

Bordens and Abbott (2022) note that Cohen’s Kappa is a popular method of assessing interrater reliability as it provides a measure of agreement between two observers on a nominal scale. This method uses the actual agreement between observers and the proportion that can be expected by chance. A Cohen’s Kappa of .7 or higher indicates good interrater reliability. The authors note that Pearson’s product-moment correlation (Pearson r) is a good measure of interrater reliability as it can easily determine the statistical significance unlike Cohen’s Kappa. Hilton et al. (2024) noted that intraclass correlations and percent agreement are effective ways to measure interrater reliability. ICC is used for observations that are scaled on an interval or ratio scale of measurement. It uses an analysis of variance approach to reliability.

All submissions must be no more than 10 pages in length (10 pages are the expected length) plus
appendices/references, written in Times New Roman Font 12 (for readability purposes), double-
spaced, with 1.0-inch margins. The appendices and references count as extra pages and must be
properly labeled and formatted. Be sure to give proper credit for sources of information you draw
    upon in your work.

Grading for this assignment primarily focuses upon these three areas which include:

The purpose of this assignment is help you in developing the ability to evaluate a business
through detailed analysis and make appropriate recommendations. It is important to be concise
    and precise throughout the report.

The process is to conduct analysis from several perspectives, identify any shortcomings or
problems (not simply the symptom, but the root-cause), provide possible solutions, make a
decision/recommendation for a specific solution, outline an implementation plan, and set
    measures to identify progress.

As the text states in Chapter 1, “Strategic management consists of the analyses, decisions, and
actions an organization undertakes in order to create and sustain competitive advantages.” That
is your mission during this case assignment.”

    Tips include:
    – In your response be concise and to the point.
    – Identify a problem that will be new to the Board.
    – Think outside the box. Be creative with your solution. This is very important!
    – Conduct outside research + use of the course text to support your submission.
    – Helpful to include input from employees/customers/competitor customers for your project.
    – Chapter 13 of the text provides helpful information regarding “how to” conduct case studies.
    – Be sure to include your name, course, and date at the start of the report.
    – Encouraged to use headings throughout the report that follow the outline listed below.
    – It will be challenging to keep the report within 10 pages. Focus on writing in a concise manner.

    Scenario
You have been selected to serve as a consultant for a business/organization for a sum of
$250,000. The client expects a well done and well thought out recommendation. If you are
successful in this endeavor, the client has additional consulting projects that you would likely be
afforded. The recipient and evaluator of your work is the Board of Directors.

It has been several years since this business/organization has done a detailed review from an
outside party. There is the need to conduct a deep and thorough analysis, pinpointing the
primary issues (problems) facing the company, and of your recommendation to address.

At the end of the day, the client expects that you will both pinpoint an issue and recommendation
that will be new to the Board. The objective is to enhance the company’s competitive advantage.

    F25

The recipient of your work is the Board of Directors. They expect precision, and a writing style
that “says what needs to be said in as few words as possible.” Charts, graphs, tables, bullet points
    are welcomed.

Details on your selection process for the particular company or organization that you select is
found at the conclusion of this document.

    Part I. Purpose
    Length: One sentence.

What is the stated purpose of your report? What are you hoping to accomplish?

    Part II Introduction

    Introduction
    Length: One to two paragraphs.

Provide a brief overview of the business/organization highlighting its history, present state, and
    general market it serves.

    Part III. Analysis
    Length: 7 pages

    – Organizational Goals and Objectives.
    1. What is the firm’s vision and/or stated mission statement (Chapter 1)?
    2. Do the firm’s short-term strategic objectives match with their long-term objectives?

    – External Environments.
    3. What do the “five forces” model developed by Michael E. Porter (Chapter 2) point out
    regarding your firm’s competitive posture?

    – Internal Environment.
    4. Do any of the four criteria for assessing sustainability of resources and capabilities
(Chapter 3 – Exhibit 3.6) point out a competitive advantage for your firm?

    – Financial.
    5. Using financial ratio techniques, of your choice, (Chapter 13 – Exhibit 13.1) review the
financial position of your firm. Are there any concerns?
    6. This is not an exhaustive financial report. Do need to use data, which can be attached
to the appendix, to support your perspective on the firm’s financial health.

    – Human Capital
    7. How might your firm improve and/or make no needed changes in their approach to
recruit, develop, and retain (Chapter 4) their employees?

    – Generic Strategies
    8. Michael Porter (Chapter 5) presents three strategies to achieve a competitive

    F25

advantage. These include overall cost leadership, differentiation, and focus. Which of the
three does your firm practice? Is that appropriate or need to be changed?

    – Industry Life Cycle
    9. Companies go through stages (Chapter 5) that include introduction, growth, maturity,
and decline. What stage is your firm at? How does that impact their strategic direction?

    – Portfolio Management
    10. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) growth/share matrix (Chapter 6) is widely
recognized. It identifies firms as stars, question marks, cash cows, and dogs. Where does your
firm stand on this matrix? How does that impact their strategic direction?

    – Competitive Actions
    11. Firms need to identify how they are going to respond to competition. Is it in your
firm’s best interest to react or be proactive by aggressively attacking? Do methods such as
forbearance or co-opetition (Chapter 8) make sense for your firm?

    Part IV. Decision
    Length: One to two paragraphs

State in a single sentence the one key problem or issue you have found facing the firm in terms
of its ability to strengthen its competitive position that you wish to address? You are welcome to
include additional text that supports that finding. What specific finding from your analysis led
    you to identify this problem?

    Part V. Action
    Length: .50 of a page

State in a single sentence your stated recommendation that you will provide to the Board.

What are three potential solutions that you wish to briefly present?
Briefly, how would you implement your recommendation?
How can your recommendation be monitored and/or measure its effectiveness?

    Part VI. Conclusion
    Length: One paragraph.

Restate your stated recommendation, that single sentence.

In summary, why are you optimistic of your recommendation?

Any final comments that you wish to share with the Board of Directors?

The remaining documentation is outside of the ten-page guideline

PART VII: APPENDICES with credits to sources
Include appropriate diagrams, financials, and/or charts that you used to conduct your analysis.

    F25

    PART VIII: REFERENCES
Include all sources used in the writing of this project – make sure to include corresponding in-
    text citations.

Selecting your specific company or organization.

There are two options available in selecting the organization which you choose to review. You
only need to select one of the two options. It will be more meaningful if you select a specific
company or organization that you have a genuine interest in.

    Publicly Traded Company.
If you have a specific company within an industry that you are interested in, that can be an
option. A publicly traded company is much easier to find key information for your analysis.

If a publicly traded company is chosen, please state why you selected it as you start your report.

    One
Again, simply choose one company or organization that you will conduct your case analysis on.

    Reminder
As a reminder, approach the assignment with an open mind. Through your analysis, that is
where you will identify the primary issue. Do not approach with an issue at the start that you are
trying to prove. Your role as the consultant is to pinpoint an issue/recommendation that will be
    new to the Board.

primary issues (problems) facing the company, and of your recommendation to address.

    Part I. Purpose

    7. How might your firm improve and/or make no needed changes in their approach to
recruit, develop, and retain (Chapter 4) their employees?

    – Generic Strategies

    F25

    Part VI.

    The Apostrophe (‘)

There are two main uses of the
    apostrophe:

    1. To show the omission of one or more
    letters in a contraction.

    2. To show ownership or possession.

    ‘

    College Writing Skills/CWS with Readings, 8E © 2011 The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.

    Chapter 37

A contraction is formed when two words
combine to make one word. The
apostrophe is used to indicate letters that
    have been dropped.

    The Apostrophe in Contractions (‘)

    WILLI +
    WE + HAVE = WE’LL

    = I’LL

    College Writing Skills/CWS with Readings, 8E © 2011 The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.

    Chapter 37

Using an apostrophe and the letter s indicates
    possession:

    • Joe’s rabbit
    • My brother’s carrot
    • The company’s credit card

Apostrophe to Show Ownership or Posession

Note: the ’s always goes with the possessor. Using the first example
above, the RABBIT belongs to JOE so it’s “Joe’s rabbit.”

    Chapter 37

    Using ’s with Plurals

An apostrophe plus s is used
    to show possession with a
singular word even if the word
already ends in s. So, if a
    rabbit belongs to Bess, you
    would write “Bess’s rabbit.”

**Discuss the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of your assigned disease process. Which clinical manifestations observed in Bayani’s case could be explained by the pathophysiological mechanisms?**

Cirrhosis can have multiple etiologies including hepatitis, metabolic syndrome (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease), and alcohol abuse over a long period of time (Mayo Clinic, 2025). Cirrhosis is the process of the liver being injured and forming scar tissue, which then impairs it’s function (Mayo Clinic, 2025).

**Analyze Bayani’s clinical manifestations in the context of your assigned disease process. Do these findings support a diagnosis of your assigned disease process? Why or why not?**

Bayani’s clinical manifestations of abdominal pain and altered mental status are consistent with cirrhosis; however, most of his symptoms are not related to cirrhosis. Clients with cirrhosis usually have ascites, which would make their abdomen appear taut and distended, rather than soft and non-distended. Additionally, frequent urination, foul smelling urine, and drinking more water than usual are not common findings in cirrhosis, but rather diabetes and a UTI as evidenced by the increased water intake, foul smelling urine, and frequent urination. Patients with diabetes are more likely to develop urinary tract infections and experience complications related to urinary tract infection (Ahmed et al., 2023).

**Identify and justify the diagnostic tests (including labs, imaging, or other diagnostic tests) that would be most appropriate for investigating a diagnosis of your assigned disease process in Bayani. What could the results of these tests look like in your assigned disease process?**

Diagnostics for cirrhosis include labs for liver function, including alanine aminotransferase, aspartame aminotransferase, and Y-galactosyltransferase which would all be elevated (Rogers & Brashers, 2023). You would also expect elevated bilirubin levels. In a patient with cirrhosis, you would anticipate decreased levels of albumin and longer prothrombin times (Rogers & Brashers, 2023). A liver biopsy can be done if needed to confirm cirrhosis; however, it is invasive and not always necessary (Rogers & Brashers, 2023). While these tests are appropriate for a patient with suspected cirrhosis, they do not seem appropriate for Bayani, as his clinical manifestations do not align with cirrhosis.

**Application of Course Knowledge: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM)**

Type 2 Diabetes is a condition where the body doesn’t use insulin properly or doesn’t make enough of it. Insulin is what helps sugar move out of the blood and into the cells to be used as energy. When the body becomes resistant to insulin or isn’t making enough, sugar builds up in the blood (Galicia-Garcia et al., 2020; Mayo Clinic, n.d.). This buildup in the blood vessels can lead to several health complications, including atherosclerosis, which increases the risk for cardiovascular disease.

Over time, high blood sugar can cause damage to major organs—especially the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. Some of the early signs of Type 2 Diabetes include drinking a lot of water, peeing more than usual, blurry vision, feeling really tired, and getting infections more easily—particularly urinary tract infections (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).

In Bayani’s case, the signs are definitely pointing toward something like Type 2 Diabetes. His wife says he’s been drinking a lot of water and using the bathroom more, which are both classic symptoms. She also mentioned that his urine smells bad, and she’s concerned about a UTI. That’s a valid concern—people with diabetes often get UTIs because the sugar in their urine creates a perfect environment for bacteria to grow. His confusion could also be from dehydration or elevated blood sugar levels (Galicia-Garcia et al., 2020).

Based on all these symptoms, Type 2 Diabetes is a possible cause.

    **Diagnostic Tests**

To evaluate Bayani and investigate Type 2 Diabetes, I would recommend the following tests:

    – Fasting blood glucose – A result of 126 mg/dL or higher supports a diabetes diagnosis.

    – Hemoglobin A1c – Reflects average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. A level of 6.5% or higher confirms the diagnosis.

    – Random blood glucose – A value over 200 mg/dL with symptoms is also diagnostic.

    – Urinalysis – To check for glucose in the urine and any signs of infection.

    – Urine culture – To identify bacteria and confirm a UTI.

    – Basic metabolic panel (BMP) – To evaluate kidney function and hydration status.

If Bayani has Type 2 Diabetes, we would expect to see high blood glucose, sugar in the urine, and possibly signs of infection.
