    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

For your response posts, address the following:

Share your own experiences or perceptions of the topic your peer addressed in their initial post.

What current events are related to the topic your peer wrote about in their initial post?

    ALEXIS POST

The history of labor and class is the topic I have chosen, however, I am concentrating on the class and labor of women throughout history. It delves further into how women are discriminated against in both the workplace and in class. In the workplace, women weren't seen as equals. These statements—"Women belong in the kitchen" or "Women are meant to be seen and not heard"—have probably been heard before. Low pay, gender discrimination, a lack of flexible work options, safety concerns, limited job advancement, and limited benefits (including healthcare) were among the class and labor issues that women faced. I could continue.

Here are some historical events that women have accomplished. All information is from the article _Fifty Years of Women's Labor History_ from NEA Today.  "50 years ago, pregnant teachers were commonly forced out of their classrooms as soon as they looked pregnant." The NEA helped file a lawsuit that made its way to the Supreme Court. Another event was "the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) declares sexual harassment a violation of Title VII and establishes guidelines that define it as 'unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.” (Flannery, 2023)

This is a subject that affects all women. The 1977 International Women's Year (IWY) Oral History Collection has a webpage. This collection includes interviews that provide firsthand reports of the National Women's Conference in Houston, Texas. It covers topics that affected women in the 1970s in the US, including healthcare, work, reproductive rights, and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Both I and a former coworker resigned from our positions. In the sense that my female boss micromanaged other female employees and continues to do so.  For those who are unfamiliar with the term, micromanagement is the practice of a manager closely monitoring and controlling the work of their staff. It is typified by an overemphasis on little details, which can undermine worker creativity and motivation.  In my coworker's situation, this female boss went to the higher up and told him false information, and he expressed to my previous coworker that he had lost trust in her.

    Flannery, M. E. (2023, February 17). _Fifty Years of Women’s Labor History | NEA_. NEA Today. Retrieved April 10, 2025, from [https://www.nea.org/nea-today/all-news-articles/fifty-years-womens-labor-history](https://www.nea.org/nea-today/all-news-articles/fifty-years-womens-labor-history)

    ERICA POST

Working on this project has helped me see how layered Hispanic and Latinx identity really is. One thing that stood out was how much meaning is packed into terms like _Hispanic_, _Latino_, and _Latinx_. These aren’t just labels they reflect history, politics, and personal identity (Benson, 2024). I also didn’t realize that Latinx people weren’t even properly recognized in the U.S. census until the 1970s, and only after major advocacy efforts. That showed me how hard our communities have had to fight just to be seen.

The stories of figures like Malinche and Sor Juana really stuck with me too. For so long, they were seen as traitors or troublemakers, but now we’re starting to understand their stories with more depth and respect (Gaspar de Alba, 2014).

Growing up in a Hispanic household, I saw firsthand how traditional gender roles shaped everything. My dad worked multiple jobs while my mom and grandma ran the house. My brother was praised for the smallest things, while I was criticized for not doing things perfectly. That experience helped me relate to others who feel boxed in by cultural expectations.

This project helped me connect the dots between my personal experiences and larger historical patterns. It made me think about how I want to raise my kids with more freedom to be themselves, and without the pressure to fit outdated roles.

    I. Introduction

    A. Hook: Language is one of the most powerful tools we have yet its use is often
    overlooked.

    B. Introduce the subjects being compared or contrasted: In “There is No Proper English,”
Kamm explains that the concept of proper English is not a real thing. In “Breaking Out
the Broken English” Chu explores the struggles of speaking broken English in a world
that degrades those kinds of voices. Both authors have their opinions on language but
approach it from different perspectives, one academic and the other personal.

    C. Thesis: Both Kamm and Chu evaluate the societal judgment of broken English, Kamm
focuses on proving there are many myths about language through logic and evidence,
but Chu shares a personal journey of being heard through language.

    II. Body

    A. Paragraph 2 – Reason #1: Both evaluate the idea of proper English
Topic Sentence: Both authors argue that the concept of proper English is harmful
    and exclusionary.

    1. Kamm shows how grammar rules are random and misleading.
    2. Chu expresses how his broken English made hisfeel ashamed and less than.
    3. Both suggest that language norms are used to limit our way of speech.
    4. Each text leaves you wondering who gets to define the correct way of language.

Conclusion Sentence: Despite their different styles, both authors urge society to rethink
    rigid language standards.

    B. Paragraph 3 – Reason #2: Differences in approach
Topic Sentence: Kamm and Chu differ significantly in their approach, with one
taking an academic side and the other a personal style.

    1. Kamm uses examples from linguistics and writing guides to make his claims.
    2. His approach is logical, persuasive, and meant to educate the reader.
    3. Chu shares sensitive moments from his life and experiences.
    4. His approach is emotional and expressive of his feelings helping readers feel his

    struggle.
Conclusion Sentence: Their differences in approach show their unique purposes, one to
inform and other to connect with others.

    C. Paragraph 4 – Reason #3: Use of identity and expressing yourself
Topic Sentence: Chu and Kamm both talk about how language is
connected to identity, but Chu focuses more on expressing yourself.

    1. Chu talks about how his language was tied to his Asian identity.
    2. He shares how reclaiming his way of speaking was an act of dedication.
    3. Kamm highlights identity more broadly discussing how class and education shape

    linguistics.
    4. Kamm focuses on social outlook while Chu focuses on believing in himself

Conclusion Sentence: although both highlight language and identity, Chu’s story
personalizes the emotional impact of language discrimination.

    D. Paragraph 5 – Reason #4: Impact
Topic Sentence: The impact of each text changes based on their
    approach and message.

    1. Kamm empowers readers by influencing them to think about rules they may have never
    thought to use.

    2. His facts and examples encourage readers to reflect on biases they may have made.
    3. Chu encourages through being vulnerable, encouraging others to embrace their voices.
    4. history repeats with those who have been affected by language discrimination.

Conclusion Sentence: Each leaves the reader with a different kind of empowerment, one
through self reflection and the other through emotional encouragement.

    III. Conclusion

Restate thesis: Kamm and Chu both challenge the use of proper English but they do so in
    structured and supportive ways.

Brief summary of similarities or differences: They both agree on the need to break down harmful
language norms but Kamm uses analysis while Chu uses storytelling. Their approaches, styles,
and personal experiences differ but both aim to empower voices that have been suppressed.

Closing thoughts: Together these texts show us that English is not just a language, it’s a
reflection of whose voices are valued compared to others. These texts show we can take a step
toward a more inclusive way of communicating.

connected to identity, but Chu focuses more on expressing yourself.

    [>Statistics homework help](https://www.sweetstudy.com/fields/mathematics-statistics)

    ## Overview

In this project, you will apply inference methods for means to test your hypotheses about the housing sales market for a region of the United States. You will use appropriate sampling and statistical methods.

    ## Scenario

You have been hired by your regional real estate company to determine if your region’s housing prices and housing square footage are significantly different from those of the national market. The regional sales director has three questions that they want to see addressed in the report:

    1. Are housing prices in your regional market lower than the national market average?
    2. Is the square footage for homes in your region different than the average square footage for homes in the national market?
    3. For your region, what is the range of values for the 95% confidence interval of square footage for homes in your market?

You are given a real estate data set that has houses listed for every county in the United States. In addition, you have been given national statistics and graphs that show the national averages for housing prices and square footage. Your job is to analyze the data, complete the statistical analyses, and provide a report to the regional sales director. You will do so by completing the Project Two Template located in the What to Submit area below.

    ## Directions

    **Introduction**

    1. **Region:** Start by picking one region from the following list of regions:

West South Central, West North Central, East South Central, East North Central, Mid Atlantic
    2. **Purpose:** What is the purpose of your analysis?
    3. **Sample:**Define your sample. Take a random sample of 500 house sales for your region.

    1. Describe what is included in your sample (i.e., states, region, years or months).
    4. **Questions and type of test:** For your selected sample, define two hypothesis questions (see the Scenario above) and the appropriate type of test for each. Address the following _for each hypothesis_:

    1. Describe the population parameter for the variable you are analyzing.
    2. Describe your hypothesis in your own words.
    3. Identify the hypothesis test you will use (1-Tail or 2-Tail).
    5. **Level of confidence:** Discuss how you will use estimation and confidence intervals to help you solve the problem.

    **1-Tail Test**

    1. **Hypothesis:**Define your hypothesis.

    1. Define the population parameter.
    2. Write null (Ho) and alternative (Ha) hypotheses. **Note:** For means, define a hypothesis that _is less than_ the population parameter.
    3. Specify your significance level.
    2. **Data analysis:**Summarize your sample data using appropriate graphical displays and summary statistics and confirm assumptions have not been violated to complete this hypothesis test.

    1. Provide at least one histogram of your sample data.
    2. In a table, provide summary statistics including sample size, mean, median, and standard deviation. **Note:** For quartiles 1 and 3, use the quartile function in Excel:

    =QUARTILE([data range], [quartile number])
    3. Summarize your sample data, describing the center, spread, and shape in comparison to the national information (under Supporting Materials, see the National Summary Statistics and Graphs House Listing Price by Region PDF). **Note:** For shape, think about the distribution: skewed or symmetric.
    4. Check the conditions.
    1. Determine if the normal condition has been met.
    2. Determine if there are any other conditions that you should check and whether they have been met. **Note:** Think about the central limit theorem and sampling methods.
    3. **Hypothesis test calculations:**Complete hypothesis test calculations.

    1. Calculate the hypothesis statistics.
    1. Determine the appropriate test statistic ( _t_). **Note:** This calculation is (mean – target)/standard error. In this case, the mean is your regional mean, and the target is the national mean.
    2. Calculate the probability ( _p_ value). **Note:** This calculation is done with the T.DIST function in Excel:

=T.DIST([test statistic], [degree of freedom], True) The degree of freedom is calculated by subtracting 1 from your sample size.
    4. **Interpretation:**Interpret your hypothesis test results using the p value method to reject or not reject the null hypothesis.

    1. Relate the _p_ value and significance level.
    2. Make the correct decision (reject or fail to reject).
    3. Provide a conclusion in the context of your hypothesis.

    **2-Tail Test**

    1. **Hypotheses:**Define your hypothesis.

    1. Define the population parameter.
    2. Write null and alternative hypotheses. **Note:** For means, define a hypothesis that is _not equal to_ the population parameter.
    3. State your significance level.

    3. Summarize your sample data, describing the center, spread, and shape in comparison to the national information. **Note:** For shape, think about the distribution: skewed or symmetric.
    4. Check the assumptions.
    1. Determine if the normal condition has been met.
    2. Determine if there are any other conditions that should be checked on and whether they have been met. **Note:** Think about the central limit theorem and sampling methods.
    3. **Hypothesis test calculations:**Complete hypothesis test calculations.

    1. Calculate the hypothesis statistics.
    1. Determine the appropriate test statistic ( _t_). **Note:** This calculation is (mean – target)/standard error. In this case, the mean is your regional mean, and the target is the national mean.]
    2. Determine the probability (p value). **Note:** This calculation is done with the TDIST.2T function in Excel:

=T.DIST.2T([test statistic], [degree of freedom]) The degree of freedom is calculated by subtracting 1 from your sample size.
    4. **Interpretation:** Interpret your hypothesis test results using the _p_ value method to reject or not reject the null hypothesis.

    1. Compare the _p_ value and significance level.
    2. Make the correct decision (reject or fail to reject).
    3. Provide a conclusion in the context of your hypothesis.
    5. **Comparison of the test results:**Revisit Question 3 from the Scenario section: For your region, what is the range of values for the 95% confidence interval of square footage for homes?

    1. Calculate and report the 95% confidence interval. Show or describe your method of calculation.

    **Final Conclusions**

    1. **Summarize your findings:** In one paragraph, summarize your findings in clear and concise plain language.
    2. **Discuss:** Discuss whether you were surprised by the findings. Why or why not?
